Here’s 1 thing to do to break the cultural hyper-achieving cycle. Stop doing everything by yourself. Maybe you've never asked for help because it makes you feel less competent. Like having someone else support you now means you’re not capable, or successful, or worthy. But what it actually does is create struggle, strain, and overwhelm. Humans were not meant to live this life solo. We are designed to be connected. As the daughter of immigrants, I was trained to figure it on my own. I rarely saw my parents ask for help, so I didn't either. Instead, I always tried to problem-solve my own challenges. I thought asking for help would just slow me down. But what actually happened is I simply felt alone. Like I didn’t belong, that I was going to be the outsider forever, and would never feel accepted by anyone. Until I learned that was simply cultural programming. These days, I have re-wired myself to ask for help as soon as I feel challenged. And it has made all the difference in the world. I never feel alone or like I don't belong. And it's all because I ask for help. Here's 1 easy way to start. *Start by accepting help.* Think of 1 thing you can accept help with today. - Say yes when they ask if they can carry out your groceries. - Say yes when a colleague offers to grab you a coffee. - Say yes when someone offers to send the calendar invite for you. COVID hangover One of the volunteer groups I work with created many rules during COVID to keep people in touch and to make sure that accounting and stuff was done. During COVID, with every few events, and chances to meet. This worked, but with COVID over and dozens of events and meetings, paperwork is a real chore, and it is eating away at people’s fun. The Organization is down 20% in membership and dropping. Many people who used to be the responsible parties in the chapters have quit. I see similar things in corporations, with touch base meetings, and other rules that were put in place to maintain morale and check in on people. Now that more people are back in the office, those COVID related meetings continue. While they were welcome during COVID, now they are at best redundant, and at worst a real drag on productivity. That sick feeling when you mess up! ?? We’ve all been there - the dawning realisation, heart racing, and wanting to run away!? My worst admin mistake makes me feel so bad when I think about it that I don't even want to write it here!?Fortunately, although the consequences could have been bad, we resolved it quickly, with no harm done. And, instead of firing me, my lovely client made me feel better by kindly sharing one of their worst mistakes. Human error is inevitable, but what’s important is how we handle our big mistakes, and what we learn from them. After the initial moment of panic, I take these steps (not necessarily in this order): - Try to calm down: Take a moment to breathe, listen to music, or talk to a friend to clear my mind. I say try because I usually want to rush into the fixing stage! - Assess the situation: Understand what happened, when, the impact, and why.? - Take responsibility: Own up to the mistake - it's the right thing to do and honesty builds trust. - Take action: Fix the immediate problem. - Reflect: Consider how to prevent the mistake from happening again.? - Offer compensation: with clients, I don’t charge for the time it takes to fix the mistake. - Try not to dwell: I try to move on, but I’m not great at this one!
