Trivia in the Twin Cities is about to get even better: Two revered institutions, Trivia Mafia and "The Initials Game," are joining forces to launch a brand-new live trivia game to play at the metro’s bars, restaurants, and breweries. It's called The Initials Game Live, and it officially kicks off Thursday, August 1, at Falling Knife Brewing Co. in Northeast Minneapolis. https://lnkd.in/gRGJdWaW

Our next Staff Spotlight is Phillip Ehresmann, nominated by Scott! Phil has hosted Trivia Mafia for over six years and currently hosts at Pizza Luce — Uptown on Mondays at 7pm and Tap Society on Tuesdays at 7pm. Phil designed mazes at lunch and read the dictionary before bed in middle school. Currently, he digs anthropology, jigsaw puzzles, and math. But he’s always grokked trivia which is why the lists at phrontistry.info are his favorite. Players love Phil because he is a ray of sunshine. He makes sure everyone is having fun and leaves feeling better than when they arrived. “A highlight is the extra prizes he awards to teams, including the crowd favorite ‘pre-stamped postcard, so you can tell someone you love how much you love them,’” Scott said. “It sounds so corny, but Phil brings an earnest energy that’s infectious. He is the best!!” One time, Phil showed up to host and there was a postcard waiting for him from some regulars … who sent it from Africa! “It's so cool to know Trivia Mafia has such kind and thoughtful patrons, and that they cared about me enough to send mail,” Phil said. In addition to cross-continental mail, Phil loves hosting trivia because he loves interacting with players, discussing nerdy things, learning new things from well-written questions, hearing players react to the game (cheers, 'Oh!'s and 'Aha!'s), and putting together playlists — which often include hints if you want to check out one of his trivia nights. We appreciate working with you Phil, hats off to you!

We pay new hosts $18/hour for one 2.8-hour shift per week; hosting is not a primary job, but it is a great way to bring in supplemental income while having a good time with players who become friends. You also receive a $30 tab toward food and drinks at your trivia site. After a host gets used to the rhythm of the gig and establishes a rapport with their regulars, we allow them to add more sites to their weekly calendar and the PTO/Sick-Safe Time we offer to all employees kicks in. We also run theme nights each month, and those events allow hosts to earn extra cash. The best trivia hosts are folks who enjoy creating a fun environment upon which their regulars can rely. Our next Staff Spotlight is Kim, nominated by Tom! She has hosted trivia for 10 years and can be found rocking the mic at Lake & Irving on Thursdays at 8:30pm. On trivia nights, catch Kim chatting up with her regulars, welcoming newcomers or doting on the staff. Drink of choice at Lake & Irving: Old-fashioned or Pinot Noir. Food: fries, burger or sushi. Things that make Kim tick outside of trivia: Traveling, baking, reading, scratch-offs, friends & family. Wisconsin bred, Minnesota grown. Players love Kim because she makes every week special. Her site is also one of the few pen-and-paper sites left, for those who are living the analog life. Her voice is a big hit as well, garnering many queries about whether she’s a radio host. In fact, for a short time she was the recording on Lake & Irving’s voicemail message! Kim is proud to represent a company that creates fun trivia experiences that many have come to know and trust. “The quality of Trivia Mafia is not only in the questions, but also in the hosts,” Kim said. “Every aspect of the game experience is brought to life by the fantastic hosts, and I'm honored to call myself one!” After a decade of hosting, Kim has seen her fair share of first dates at trivia night — Lake & Irving offers a chill and well-lit vibe, so it’s no surprise. That said, sometimes these daters have forgotten they’re in public. “I had one team/couple stop playing mid-game and proceed to make out the entire second half right next to where I was set up,” Kim said. “Anyone looking at me saying the question also got a show.” We encourage folks to not make out in front of Kim while she’s hosting, but instead give her three cheers for being such a great host!
