On Saturday, hundreds of New Yorkers hit the streets to protest plans by the U.S. Department of Transportation to reverse congestion pricing. After decades of activism to turn the system on, a broad coalition of New York advocates (including Riders Alliance, Transportation Alternatives, Regional Plan Association, and Tri-State Transportation Campaign) rallied people to advocate for its continuation, for the autonomy of New York State, and against the overreach of the Trump administration. The Trump Administration’s attempt to shut down congestion pricing is a betrayal of New Yorkers, especially the millions of working-class people who take the buses, subways and trains every day. #CongestionPricing has been in effect for over 3 weeks now, already bringing with it faster bus times, fewer cars in the Central Business District, and more funding for transit. The program's implementation is the result of decades of research and advocacy. RPA has been recommending the implementation of a congestion pricing scheme since the 1960s, and has championed its recent implementation since the early 2000s. Kate Slevin, Executive Vice President at RPA, has been among the countless advocates pushing for the start of #CongestionPricing since the early days of her career. As we watch the program continue to unfold in New York City, Kate provides a short retrospective on the journey to its beginning. On Monday, Governor Murphy signed A1476/S361—a bill that creates the Target Zero Commission and commits New Jersey to the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2040! ?? ?? When a couple of us drafted the initial version of this bill years ago, it felt like a reach, but thanks a group of really dedicated advocates who have continued to show up and fight for years as well as a couple of champions in the legislature, this commitment has finally become law. ?
