    “The American internet cowboys want to purchase our razor blade factory.” Not something you hear every day, but that’s what Jeffrey Raider, co-founder of Warby Parker & Harry's Inc., said during our conversation on the 2024 Whalies stage. Jeff's journey from an MBA student with an idea to building not one but two iconic brands was packed with lessons for every founder out there.? Here are 3 key takeaways from the successful 2x DTC founder ?? ??Focus on what matters: Jeff and his co-founders launched Warby Parker from their apartments, talking directly to customers and iterating based on feedback. They focused on two things. A stellar product, and listening to their customers. The goal was to never build a successful DTC business. It was to create products people loved. ??Quality matters: When launching Harry's, Jeff went all in on quality—so much so that they bought a razor blade factory in Germany to control the entire product experience. This allowed them to iterate quickly and make the changes their consumers wanted to see. ??Bootstrapping vs. VC: Jeff's advice? Stay as scrappy as possible early on. Constraints create focus. It’s no secret that capital is harder to come by than it was. Which Jeff says is a good thing, and will build even more focus in small teams. The biggest lesson? Build brands people love. It comes down to understanding your customers, controlling every touchpoint, and staying obsessed with making their experience better. The 2025 Whalies are quickly approaching in May, and I couldn't be more excited. If you're a founder, brand, or just looking for the boost to kickstart 2025 this is where you want to be.
