Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, and we’re reflecting on our incredible Harvesting Hope: Dinner for a Sustainable Future event with?Rethink Food?during NYC?#ClimateWeek. ???? Our modern food systems have given us so much, yet they also pose significant challenges. Current production and consumption patterns are not sustainable for people or planet and are increasingly vulnerable to effects of climate change like heat, drought, and increased spread of pests and diseases. Meanwhile, we waste around a third of the food that we produce. When it ends up in landfill, all the land, water, and other resources used to grow that food also go to waste. Additionally, as that wasted food decomposes, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. This dinner presented a vision for a climate-resilient future of food by combining upcycled excess ingredients and ingredients made with groundbreaking technology, offering a (literal) taste of various strategies being developed to tackle the complex challenges facing our food systems. While there’s no silver bullet solution, the evening was a hopeful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together toward achieving common goals. ????? Excess fertilizer nutrients from agricultural fields, namely nitrogen and phosphorus, enter water systems resulting in “eutrophication” – when too many nutrients in the water create toxic conditions for aquatic wildlife. In our recent collaboration with Superorganism, we explored the critical issue of nutrient pollution from agriculture and its impact on ecosystems. The report highlights innovative AgTech solutions to tackle this challenge, including using precision farming techniques, genetically engineering crops to require less fertilizer, and enhancing plant-microbe interactions. Can we nourish 10 billion people while restoring the Earth? Last week, we attended the TED Conferences #TedCountdown event focused on The Future of Food addressing this question. This two-day gathering underscored the critical importance of collaboration as we reshape our food systems to ensure a sustainable future. We were thrilled to be able to contribute by hosting a Breakthrough Session “Harnessing AgTech for Biodiversity Conservation” presented by our Founder, Sarah Garland, PhD, and Triple Helix Advisory Team member, Matthew Hayek, PhD. This session emphasized the vital role of #AgTech in producing enough food for a growing population while preserving biodiversity.? Attendees of the conference also embarked on group excursions to pioneering local New York City initiatives at the forefront of food and agriculture production. We helped organize a visit to C16 Biosciences, a company using precision fermentation to create an alternative to palm oil, a product that is currently responsible for 80% of land use conversion? in Southeast Asia.? For a conference about food, what did we eat? The conference featured a remarkable dinner titled “The Last Supper,” curated by Chef Sam Kass, which showcased foods at risk of disappearing due to climate change like shellfish, wine, wheat, coffee, and chocolate. For lunch we were able to try cultivated chicken from UPSIDE Foods and a variety of impressive vegan cheeses from Climax Foods.
