Last week, a few of our team members spent time in New Orleans at the Society of American Military Engineers’ Federal Small Business Conference! It was an electric three days among more than 6,000 individuals, representing employers like government agencies and professional service providers, all eager to network with each other and hear from industry leaders. We were excited to be back at this year’s conference, except this time as an SBA 8(a) certified small business. Opportunities like the SBC are important for us as a small business to connect with major players in the public sector that execute on projects critical to infrastructure, the environment, and health and safety. Our team has demonstrated our standard of service on several projects for government agencies at the local, state, and federal level. These projects have blossomed into strong partnerships, many of which have their beginnings at occasions like this. November is Native American Heritage Month. What does it celebrate? Native American Heritage Month honors the traditions and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples while recognizing the importance of keeping these traditions and stories alive. Crucial to this is keeping these stories visible for others to see. Recently, the City of Marquette unveiled the Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture in Marquette created by Anishinaabe sculptor Jason Quigno. His sculpture is a physical embodiment of values that have been passed along for generations – love, respect, honesty, bravery, truth, humility, and wisdom. These values, no matter who you are or what your background is, are intrinsic–our human nature. I’m proud to see the City honor these teachings publicly, both as a business partner and a resident of the community. These values are ones I strive to lead in my life, and lead with as a Native American Owned Small Business owner whose purpose is to help take care of the land and those who live on it. November is an opportune time to reflect on the values of traditions that Indigenous people honor, but that shouldn’t end when the month is over. We’re ready to continue doing our part to keep water safe in Michigan’s schools ?? Thanks to our recent contract with the State of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s School Drinking Water program, we will continue to provide lead assessments and Water Management Plans in schools and childcare facilities across the state. This summer, our health and safety teams were able to provide more than 100 assessments on school facilities across the state. Our teams are ready to continue with diligence on this important work to keep our communities and their critical infrastructure safe, and support the State of Michigan’s commitment to ensure safe and clean drinking water for everyone here. Happy National #STEM Day! National STEM Day celebrates all things science, technology, engineering, math, and everything in between. It encourages students to explore their interests and pursue these areas of study– which are critical to innovation, progress, and building our future. As STEM fields continue to grow and evolve, there is so much room for learning and discovery. We interact with these fields in our lives in many ways, not only in areas like our work at TriMedia Environmental & Engineering Services, but also in our day to day lives and how we understand the world around us. Working in the world of STEM means I get to be a lifelong learner myself and encourage others to do the same– whether its those pursuing education in STEM, our interns from this summer earning degrees at Northern Michigan University, Yale University, and Michigan State University, students we meet at career fairs interested in the work we do, or even my own kiddos in exploring their curiosity and interest in discovery.? ? Last week we had our very own “Youper Souper Bowl!” ?? Friday was our annual soup competition in our Marquette office featuring some delicious soups and stews made by our own team members. It was the perfect remedy to a rainy Halloween the day prior ?? With the Lions vs. Packers game over the weekend, AKA the “Yooper Bowl,” we added a twist to our annual competition with a giveaway of four tickets to the game at Lambeau! This earned our soup competition this year its title of a “Youper Souper Bowl.” Denise Mullins and Scott Marketto were our lucky winner of the tickets – they braved the conditions at Lambeau Field during what was an exciting border battle ?? A culture of safety in work environments includes hazard reduction at its core, as well as trust building, inclusion, and psychological safety. The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) echoes this in their recent article about the responsibility of safety leaders in accomplishing this and gives a framework for building a culture of safety. While factors like inclusion and culture may not initially be front of mind when focused on hazard reduction, they’re critical to success and thriving work environments. When trust and psychological safety are priorities in workplaces, it aids problem-solving, new opportunities for hazard reduction, and a deeper understanding of operations. Our health and safety professionals bring the expertise to anticipate, identify, and mitigate workplace hazards to every project. But it doesn’t stop there. Working with a wide variety of clients, we’ve discovered that safety environments are improved and we can solve unique problems when we create strong partnerships. That means working collaboratively, understanding each team and their needs, and remaining dedicated across all levels of our organization to help our clients succeed. A recent article in EHS Today discussed the most effective ways to support your team’s health and wellbeing that goes beyond the responsibility of a select few. Rather, it’s creating a supportive environment throughout your organization where individuals feel supported and have the agency to get help when needed. There can be a stigma in workplaces, especially industrial workplaces, about mental health.
