Lashing chains, straps, or wire used to secure cargo must be of sufficient capacity for the application it is being use in. Equally as important are the anchor points on the vessel that these securing devices connect too. Like a chain, the securing system is only as strong as the weakest link. Age, harsh conditions and forgone maintenance can lead to degradation and premature failure of securing points on a ship. This is a case where a rated D-ring had to be replaced because the structural integrity of the cup rendered the ring useless. Proper inspections of vessels, cargo, and transport cases ensure the safety of the cargo and crew of the vessel by identifying failure points.
