With the help of the FUERTE project and savings groups, she is running a shaved ice business and dreams of buying her mother a better house. Despite constant challenges, María keeps pushing forward. Through our economic empowerment and financial inclusion programs, we support survivors of Gender-Based Violence like María to gain confidence, resources, and social networks to rebuild their lives. The tragic murders of Rebecca Cheptegei, Agnes Tirop, Damaris Mutua, and Edith highlight a harsh reality: for many women, success can be dangerous. Across the globe, when women defy traditional roles or achieve too much, they risk retaliation by the men in their lives. ? Having lived and worked in developing countries, I’ve seen this dynamic unfold repeatedly. Women across the globe are making decisions, large and small, based on what will be acceptable to the men in their lives. Every opportunity for a woman has to pass through the gatekeepers of male approval. As the president and CEO of Trickle UP, a global NGO dedicated to forging pathways out of poverty for women, I know that as vile as we find violence against women, it is a symptom of a larger problem: some men’s belief that they have the right to control women’s behavior. Some exert control through violence, some through financial dominance, others through the threat of divorce and social isolation. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (November 25–December 10) is a vital opportunity to confront this crisis. We desperately need to redefine manhood in a way that doesn’t involve dominating women. H.R. 9495 is a threat to free speech, civil liberties, and the ability of nonprofits to advocate for the communities we serve. The US House of Representatives just passed H.R. 9495, a bill that would grant the executive branch unprecedented authority to investigate, intimidate, and dismantle nonprofit organizations — including news outlets, universities, and nonprofits like Trickle Up. We are deeply concerned about the chilling effect this legislation would have on the nonprofit sector and civil society at large. The ability to speak out, organize, and advocate is fundamental in the fight for social justice and against poverty.?? If passed, this bill could be used to silence critics, curb free speech, and punish organizations that work for causes deemed controversial. Any administration would have the power to target political opponents and punish those who stand up for the most marginalized.? ?? Trickle Up is standing with more than 130 organizations like Oxfam America,?
