Serving individuals with aphasia, their families and the community throughout North Carolina.

关于我们

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit that serves individuals with aphasia, their families, and the community throughout North Carolina with family trainings, aphasia groups, caregiver groups and more. Our life participation approach means that we help clients and families fully engage in the world around them. Our programs are based on hope, determination, purpose and engagement. What is aphasia? Aphasia is a communication disorder that does not impact intelligence or memory, rather a person’s ability to use language including speech, writing, reading, and listening. Aphasia results from injury to the brain in the form of stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumor, infection and some progressive disease processes. TAP's groups for people with aphasia provide a welcoming and understanding environment where they can connect with one another and improve their communication skills. Our hybrid model offers both virtual and in-person groups. Groups are led by speech pathologists, music therapists or trained volunteers. Groups cater to different hobbies and passions, creating an environment that encourages life participation by building connections and community.

  • #GivingTuesday is coming up on December 3rd. Celebrated each year the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this is a day to come together and give instead of shop. With the funds we could spend on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, we can instead make a lasting impact on a community in need. TAP is the only non-profit bringing virtual and in-person conversation groups to people with aphasia in North Carolina, and the need is only growing. For most of our clients, we are the only aphasia recovery resource they have. Please consider TAP this Giving Tuesday, and share this message with your family and friends. https://onecau.se/aphasia

I was glad to spend yesterday at a fun event. ?? Smedes York worked with his team at York Properties and Charlotte Fullbright to put on a Maintain Your Brain concert and fundraiser for Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited. Maintain Your Brain is an awareness and fundraising platform that helps us reach new audiences in our area with education about aphasia, strokes and brain health. Good work to this team and congratulations on the event!

A wonderful evening with Justine Knight, Annie Lane and Olivia Herrmann of Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited as they provided excellent training about aphasia. I didn’t take notes but I asked GenAI to provide a summary and it remarkably mirrors what was shared tonight. ?? Supporting Individuals with Aphasia: A Guide for Effective Communication Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects a person's ability to process and use language. It's a challenging condition, not just for those diagnosed but also for their friends, family, and colleagues. Here are some insights and tips on how to support someone living with aphasia. ?? Understanding the Experience Individuals with aphasia may know exactly what they want to say. They can often visualize the concept or understand it, yet they struggle to find the right words. This can be deeply frustrating, leading to feelings of isolation or embarrassment. They might think, "I know what I want to say, why can't I say it?" and feel anxious about the social expectations to communicate fluently. ??How You Can Help 1. Gain Attention: Make sure you have their attention before speaking. 2. Reduce Distractions: Limit background noise to help them focus. 3. Keep It Simple: Use straightforward language at a normal volume. 4. Be Patient: Allow them time to express themselves without interruption. 5. Use Multiple Modes: Combine gestures, writing, and facial expressions with speech. 6. Confirm Understanding: Ask yes/no questions to ensure mutual understanding. 7. Encourage Attempts: Celebrate all attempts to communicate, regardless of errors. 8. Involve Them: Include them in conversations and decisions as much as possible. 9. Encourage Independence: Allow them to be as self-reliant as they can. 10. Use Visual and Auditory Cues: Body language and tone can aid comprehension. Creating an environment where individuals with aphasia feel understood and valued is crucial. By employing these strategies, we can make a significant difference in their ability to connect and communicate with the world around them.
