The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the 2023 Employer-Reported Workplace Injuries and Illnesses Data. The Key Highlights: ? Private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2023, down 8.4 percent from 2022. This was driven by a 56.6% drop in illnesses (see photo below). ? In 2023, the incidence rate of total recordable cases (TRC) in private industry was 2.4 cases per 100 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, down from 2.7 in 2022. ??Injuries occurred at a rate of 2.2 cases per 100 FTE workers, down from 2.3 in 2022. ? The incidence rate of illnesses decreased in 2023 to 19.0 cases per 10,000 FTE workers, from 45.2 in 2022. ? Respiratory illnesses occurred at a rate of 9.5 cases per 10,000 FTE workers in 2023, down from 35.8 in 2022.? ?There were 946,500 nonfatal injuries and illnesses involving days away from work (DAFW) in 2023, 20.1 percent lower than in 2022. ???? This week, I am spending time at one of my retainer clients, a foundry. Triangle Safety Consulting LLC has been helping them improve and update their written safety programs. ???? We are also creating site-specific training presentations to go with the written programs, as well as quizzes to evaluate competency and understanding of the content presented in the training. ??? What does this safety finding tell you? It tells me a story…that employees don’t understand why it is crucial to wear a seatbelt on the Powered Industrial Truck (PIT, fancy word for forklift). This company keeps the seat belt buckled at all times, yes, even when the forklift is in use. Some forklifts require that the seatbelt is engaged and bucked for it to function. This seat belt buckled at all times is called bypassing a safety feature. This company stated they inspected the forklift before use. But how do we prove it when there is no documentation and the seatbelt buckled is found? Takeaways: 1. Seatbelts must be worn on sit down forklifts. 2. Use pre-use inspection forms for forklifts. It’s a best practice to document them. 3. Operators must be trained in classroom and hands on, and must be reevaluated every 3 years. 4. You must be 18 years old or older to operate a PIT. 5. Don’t operate propane powered forklifts in spaces with no ventilation (carbon monoxide buildup is a health hazard). PS: it’s crucial to wear your seatbelt because forklifts are around 3 times the weight of a car! If there is a tip over, you must stay in the forklift cab and brace yourself for the fall.
