Congratulations to Dr. Wynn Rosser on his appointment to lead the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as Commissioner of Higher Education! It’s a wrap! Sara Reeves, Dr. Jay L. McCullar, Ed.D and I enjoyed this year’s Exponent Philanthropy conference held in Austin - lots of learning, networking and serving as local ambassadors by offering a running list of our favorite hangouts!

Today, Mike Nylund and I joined President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for the Classroom to Career Summit, where the White House highlighted one of Scholarship America’s new programs to provide emergency aid to students who are single moms. Scholarship America, in partnership with the ECMC Foundation, GoFundMe.org, the Trellis Foundation, Ascendium's Education Philanthropy, and the Crimsonbridge Foundation will launch a new, national emergency aid program to assist students, including those who are single mothers, in 2025. Nearly 10 percent of undergraduates—1.7 million students—are single mothers, and while single moms earn higher GPAs than their non-parenting peers, they experience greater rates of financial distress. Research shows emergency grants are effective at keeping financially distressed students on track to complete their degrees. At their September 2024 meeting, the Trellis Foundation Board of Directors approved over $2 million in grants, bringing the total giving for the Foundation’s fiscal year to $10.6 million.
