Yesterday, Trellis Coworking & Events celebrated its 3rd anniversary, and I was there as a live painter ??. ? As for the idea behind my artwork: I imagined a woman with an amazing idea in her mind, bringing it to life to create a colorful and beautiful startup! After finishing the artwork, everyone was asked to write their company's names on it, and of course, I included Trellis! ?? Friday night Trellis turned 3 years old, and we threw a birthday party. For me, it had the feeling of rebirth and renewal — finding our way back to the light after a long, dark winter. We launched Trellis Coworking & Events mid-pandemic, a phoenix rising from the ashes of Covo, the coworking space I founded and opened in 2016. Covo perished due to Covid, as we lost 94% of revenue overnight and quickly ran out of money. We rebooted as Trellis, a new company in partnership with our landlord. I took a backseat, burned out on coworking, and ready to shift into climate resilience work. But our beautiful phoenix struggled to fly as people returned to the office only to leave again during the Delta variant, returned, and fled Omicron. Violence against Asians and Blacks blasted across the country, encouraging even more isolation and unbelonging. Each catastrophe meant fewer people returned to Trellis, more conferences left San Francisco, more restaurants and businesses shuttered, and more tent encampments sprouted like patches of mushrooms after rain. The team slowly burned out and lost their sparkle. Our numbers declined. Last November our numbers dipped below sustainability, and Jason told me we had to close. My body reacted with a sharp "No!" and I asked Jason to return Trellis to me. In that moment I realized I had a new vision for Trellis as a home base for climate resilience and all of the priority groups most impacted and least supported —?indigenous, queer, female, POC. The team and I planned myriad new initiatives. We partnered with Rhizome Urban Gardens to uplift the space with beautiful healthy plants. We launched a dozen new ways for members to connect — weekly Tea Time on Tuesdays, Thursday Fundays, and Friday Happy Hours. We added a commission structure so the team makes more for their efforts. We partnered with Dasha Shunina of Women Tech Meetup to support women. We began growing rapidly. Friday night felt like a culmination of everything we've worked on and towards for the last 6 months. Well over 100 people gathered to celebrate. We heard from Betsy Burroughs and Hanna Aliashkevich, MD, about how to combat loneliness and build community. One attendee told my husband and cofounder Jason Pan he connected more deeply with folks at the party than he has in the last 9 months at his coworking space. I felt complete and grateful to steward such a space and group of spectacular humans. Michael Anthony Levitt provided delicious food from @thepawnshopsf, Kate Ferman live-painted a gorgeous canvas during the party and I saw Trellis in fan art for the first time and cried. Michael Strider DJ'd and we were treated to a wonderful after-party in a beautiful private room @Monarchsf — I took a quiet moment to reflect and felt gratitude flood my body for where we were and where we are today.
