Amasar LLC introduced thousands to #breadfruit at #NaturalProductsExpoWest in California! We love Amasar's breadfruit flour and pancake and waffle mix. They're gluten-free, high fiber, and nutrient dense. Breadfruit trees improve food security, economic development, and the environment in tropical, developing countries where they are grown. The more North Americans know about breadfruit and purchase products made with it, the better life will be for communities in need. Thank you, Marisol Villalobos, Jesus Martes and the #Amasar team, for making the world a better place!

This winter break, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Sydney Pagan STEM Academy in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, with my teammates Sabrina Araya and Mia Jeremiah as part of our Interdisciplinary Product Design capstone course at Northwestern University. Over the past two quarters, we have been working with Mike McLaughlin from the Trees That Feed Foundation to optimize the throughput of their solar dehydrator, which encounters challenges during cloudy or rainy weather. During our visit, we explored ways to improve the dehydration process, including testing the effects of pre-dehydration moisture reduction using a wine press and comparing it to unpressed breadfruit strips. We also assessed various cutting methods to understand how preparation affects drying efficiency. Our research included collecting temperature data, measuring humidity and ambient conditions, and making qualitative observations of the drying process. We are now incorporating these findings into a final design, which we will present to the Trees That Feed Foundation in March. I would also like to thank Professors John Anderson and Stacy Benjamin for their guidance and support, as well as to Mike and Mary McLaughlin for their invaluable help in organizing this enriching experience.

Read about Natasha Norris' recent trip to #Uganda! After witnessing such success, we are confident that Ugandan partners and beneficiaries will build self-sustaining households and businesses with breadfruit. Don't miss the photos in our blog! Special thanks go to Aid Africa and His Grace Demo Farm for hosting fantastic events, where we introduced traditional food made with breadfruit, shared breadfruit tree farming techniques, and solidified trustworthy relationships with farmers and partner organizations. We are grateful to Epaineto Kamya Musigire, who leads TTFF in East Africa, as well as Nightingale Kasumba and Philippa Nantamu, Natasha's hosts. They also prepared the food made with breadfruit and taught tree propagation. Thank you to Kathy Johnson, Grace Mubiru, Nattimba Grace, Andrew E. Briggs, Freedom of Creation, Nancy Bacon, Mark Okoke, Bright Hope, Trustlines, Regenerate Africa, Great Outdoors Uganda, Hareth Center, and more, plus our supporters who are making this work possible! https://lnkd.in/ezEUbr_9

Mary McLaughlin and Mike McLaughlin visited partners in Abaco and Nassau who care as deeply about food security, economic activity, and a healthy environment as TTFF does. They spent time on farms where we planted breadfruit trees in response to the devastation of Hurricane Dorian. Those trees and the food and income they are generating were a beautiful sight to see! Thank you to the many Bahamians who believe in the power of breadfruit and those around the world who are making the magic happen. Among the important ways Ronald Poon Affat supports Trees That Feed is by spreading awareness of our work. He has done this in a unique way - by nominating co-founder Mike McLaughlin for awards from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. After winning the awards, Mike had the opportunity to address large gatherings of his fellow actuaries, explaining the work of TTFF. We are thankful to the many people in this field who take interest in and support our mission! To Mr. Poon-Affat: We're grateful for all the ways you have demonstrated your belief in us over the years! Read the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/gsSrBKVy

A member of our board of directors, Jamaican Nicola Barrett represents TTFF in the Caribbean on frequent trips from the U.S. There’s nothing like a face-to-face encounter for accountability, and we do not have the capacity to travel everywhere we work consistently. Nicola’s contributions to Trees That Feed are invaluable. A dedicated advocate, she said of TTFF: “I believe in their passion for this very impactful work. This goes beyond simply growing or donating breadfruit trees. It’s about the empowerment these opportunities provide – education, employment, entrepreneurial, business, agricultural, philanthropic – all wrapped up in one.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gtHp_qSf We're grateful for you, Nicola!
