Our Faison, North Carolina, facility has always been an important fixture in their local community. Charles F. Cates founded the Cates pickle business in 1898. The business eventually moved from its original location in Mebane, North Carolina, to Faison. The plant was acquired by Dean Foods and became part of TreeHouse Foods in 2005. And, the facility has kept with tradition – it still produces pickles! Not only does the facility have a long history in the community, but it also lays claim to producing the first American pickle launched into space. Dr. William Thornton, who became a highly accomplished NASA astronaut during his long and distinguished career, was from the town of Faison. Wanting to help support and recognize his community, he brought a Cates Dill Pickle from the Faison plant with him into orbit on the Challenger shuttle during the Spacelab 3 Mission (STS 51-B) from April 29 - May 6, 1985. The mission was accomplished in 110 orbits of the Earth, so the pickle spent 169 hours in space! More than 200 people from the community of Faison traveled in person to see the space shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Our Faison plant has a rich history in the community, and we are proud of our employees and the facility. While there are many pickle plants in the U.S., only one can say it produced the first pickle in space! #BetterToghther?

The TreeHouse Foods Parent and Caregiver Network recently hosted an outdoor challenge, encouraging families to get outside and take some great pictures! Employees captured their various outdoor pursuits, and the winners received prizes through our internal recognition program. The Parent & Caregiver Network is an Employee Resource Group (ERG) created and run by TreeHouse Foods employees. It offers working parents and caregivers an inclusive and supportive community and provides employees with tools?to achieve their professional goals while balancing their personal commitments. ? Manoj Shah, a Senior Microbiologist at TreeHouse Foods, was recently recognized as one of STOP Foodborne Illness Alliance’s 40 Under 40 Food Safety Professionals! Manoj provides microbiological expertise and food safety support across our organization, working with a cross-functional team to meet food safety standards and drive continuous improvement. Originally opened in 1915, our Wayland, Michigan, facility was built by the Helvetia Milk Condensing Company. The Helvetia Milk Condensing Company employed approximately 20 people and produced evaporated milk. Various entities owned the facility before it was acquired by TreeHouse Foods in 2005. Over the years, the facility has made a variety of products, including dried eggs, ice cream milk, Instant Breakfast and Heartland Puffed Cereal. We currently produce non-dairy creamer at the facility. Our Wayland facility is also connected to the local community. In May, the plant quickly stepped in with donations after a tornado hit a nearby town, donating supplies to help those who were impacted. “Tornadoes don’t occur in Michigan very often, so we knew we had to do something to help,” said Meaghan Newton, HR Manager for the Wayland plant. “Fortunately, we only had a few employees with residences in Portage, and they only had minor damage to their homes. Sadly, it affected hundreds of others and destroyed many homes and businesses completely.” The Wayland facility is a wonderful demonstration of our #BetterTogether value.
