Bárbara Pinho describes new research on elephant behavior in the Autumn issue of New Humanist: She reports on a study published in Nature that reveals elephants can call each other by name. Conducted by a team from Colorado State University, the research involved analyzing the vocalizations of African savannah elephants. In the first experiment, patterns in their deep rumbles suggested they use specific sounds for particular individuals. A second experiment involved playing recorded rumbles to wild elephants, which showed they responded eagerly when called by their specific sounds. This ability to name-call highlights elephants' complex social interactions, raising questions about similarities between elephants and humans in communication, despite their different evolutionary paths. Mark Lorch looks at some exciting developments in blood compatibility in the Autumn issue of New Humanist: He discusses the importance of blood transfusions and the critical need for blood type compatibility to prevent adverse reactions, including death. Humans have four main blood types (A, B, AB, and O) defined by the presence of specific sugars, or glycans, on red blood cells. Type O blood is universal due to the absence of these antigens. Scientists have been working to convert A and B blood types into O types for greater compatibility, especially in emergencies. Recent research from a Scandinavian team has made progress using enzymes from bacteria that can remove A and B antigens effectively. Previous methods in the 1980s partially succeeded but didn't eliminate all antigen reactivity. The current research shows that when converted B-type blood is mixed with O-type plasma, it results in only about 5% immune response, indicating potential for universal blood. However, challenges remain, particularly with A-type blood, which has more complex antigens. Extensive safety studies and regulatory approvals are necessary before this technology can be widely adopted.
