What a great day hosting Ben Marchionna alongside our regional partners 20Fathoms Discovery Pier Northwestern Michigan College Michigan Technological University and others! ??

    Michigan's First-Ever Chief Innovation Ecosystem Officer ?? | 2x Hard-Tech Startup Veteran ?? | Ex-Skunk Works Engineer ?? | Private Pilot ??????

?? This time, we're on a boat! Thanks, Warren, Camille, and Traverse Connect, for helping me explore the #CreativeCoast on a picture-perfect northern Michigan fall day. ?? #DidYouKnow that Michigan's Great Lakes are the largest freshwater system on the planet? With 4,530 miles of coastline, they make up the most miles of coastline in the contiguous U.S. (it's nearly 11,000 miles if you include Canada's side)! That's way more than the 2,165 miles of coast for the 14 states on the Atlantic Ocean, and the 1,293 miles of coast for California, Oregon, and Washington on the West Coast. During our adventures, we talked with Delaney Keating at 20Fathoms about launching new venture funds and entrepreneurial support programs. We visited Discovery Pier with Matt McDonough to "dive" into the soon-to-break-ground Freshwater Research & Innovation Center, which will provide space for research vessels, a dockside learning lab, marine technology commercialization, ecology studies, educational tall ship sails, and more. Amazingly, this area was an industrial waterfront and deep water harbor for nearly a century, supplying the region with coal fuel, road salt, and other essential goods. It has since transformed into a universally accessible public space, collaborating with water-focused nonprofits and businesses to create enriching opportunities for all to experience the Great Lakes. We next charted a path to the future over lunch with Andrew Bernhard (Michigan Technological University), Warner Queeny (Boomerang Catapult, LLC. ), Willard Kitchen (Office of Possibilities), David Kronberg, and nick beadleston (Grove Community Incubator). The afternoon journey was led by Jason Slade, John Lutchko, and Daniel Goodchild to understand Northwestern Michigan College's maritime academy, hands-on technical programs in marine and wet tech, uncrewed robotics systems (aerial and submersible), and commercial aviation. These programs were incredible to see in person. Unsurprisingly, they have an insane 98% job placement rate! If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you. ??
