Thank you Carrie for spending time to understand the complex and historic events not just the Southern USA but What Happened Here Changed the World.

Some stories are hard to write ... This was one of them. Not because the story itself wasn't interesting – far from it – but because you want to do justice to the people within your story. When I was in Birmingham, Alabama, last year, I met community elders who were thrown in jail as children in the 1960s because they protested segregation in their city. I met a woman who worships at a church that was integral to the civil rights movement. And I stood in front of a statue of four little girls who were killed by a bomb set in their church. Given the political climate today, it's important to remember the events of recent times and not become complacent. Thanks so much to Sarah Maguire at Explore Travel for publishing this story, and for the assistance and guidance from Jacob Annesley, who works with Travel South USA, Brooklyn Lundy from the Alabama Tourism Department, and Vickie Ashford from Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau.
