The Truth About Target, DEI, & George Floyd In 2021 Target announced a 2 Billion dollar pledge to spend on Black / Minority Businesses, almost one year after George Floyd was murdered by the Minneapolis Police. One might cynically see this pledge as a PR stunt to obscure culpability. Since its inception, Target has been one of the largest donors to the Minneapolis Police Department. In 2004, they created the SafeZone/Safe City program, which operated as a massive surveillance operation to aid local authorities. The program largely led to the targeting of Minneapolis's Black youth and homeless populations and provided a blueprint for their stores nationwide. Pro-Publica reported that it also helped fund the implementation of Palanatir Technologies for the police through its Target Foundation in Los Angeles. The same technology Israel uses in targeting Palestinians. Target used its pledge to not only increase its declining revenue by capitalizing on the growing #dei movement, it did so as a strategic endeavor to use the culture and nomenclature of anti-racism to provide cover for how it operated behind the scenes. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and for many, the choice between Target and Walmart is Sophie's choice of oppression. If you can, however, find local Black and Minoritized owners to support them directly.
