关于我们
I'm Dan Runcie, and I started Trapital to elevate the culture I love. The artists I once looked up to are now some of our most successful business leaders. But they rarely got the coverage they deserved. I’ve spent my career in business reading deep strategic breakdowns on every other industry, but never hip-hop. Honestly, I was over it. Where were the folks who looked like me? Where were the business leaders who repped what I cared about? I first started writing about the business of hip-hop as a hobby. It was something to explore while I was job hunting after business school. My personal Medium page led to freelance writing gigs at major publications. The bylines were cool and all, but I still didn’t feel like I made an impact. The business of hip-hop needed its own home. Trapital was launched in March 2018 and has grown ever since. Trapital’s memos, essays, and podcasts are followed by the leading executives in music, media, tech, and more. Trapital has been seen in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR, CNBC, Axios, and more. Learn more at trapital.co

WhatsApp is a force of nature. It has 2 billion monthly active users. Thousands of business rely on it to reach customers. But it has one big similarity to music streaming: It’s cultural impact far outweighs the profits it generates. WhatsApp does have B2B revenue-generating services like WhatsApp Business API and click-to-message and more, but the app is not yet a cash generator for Meta like Instagram or Facebook. Will WhatsApp close the gap? Does it need to? In our latest episode of Trapital, we broke down WhatsApp’s journey, business model, value prop; and future. Listen to me and Tatiana Cirisano break it all down. Here’s the episode: https://lnkd.in/dJXN65aR

Music is cheaper than ever but fans are often skeptical of price increases to any service. “Who gets the additional money?” “Will they pay artists more?” Regardless of the truth or nuance, that narrative lingers on. Listen to me and Tatiana Cirisano discuss Spotify’s potential plans with its Music Pro tier and whether it’s the right solution. You can listen to this episode here: https://lnkd.in/ePNE-hsv

Major record labels wants music streaming to be priced higher, similar to Netflix. Will music streaming services launch a premium tier that customers want to buy? Netflix’s premium tier is $24.99/mo in the U.S. Spotify’s main offering is $11.99/mo. The company is exploring a Music Pro tier with remixing tools, premium audio, and concert presale access for ~$18/mo. On the latest episode of Trapital, I talked about the pros and cons with Tatiana Cirisano: https://lnkd.in/eeNXxySn

Spotify is exploring a 'Music Pro' tier at $18 per month with access to concert presales, remixing songs, and high quality audio. But who is this for? The record labels have been eager to find ways for music lovers to pay more for music. They see Netflix's $25 per month premium tier, (more than double Spotify's $12 per month in the U.S.) and want similar. Music streaming is a very inexpensive product. But is 'Music Pro' what superfans really want? If the end goal is to add more value and charge more, are there better ways to achieve that? I broke it all down in our latest Trapital memo. Who is Spotify Music Pro Really For? https://lnkd.in/eTVTwqE9 You can also listen to our latest Trapital episode for a full breakdown.
