Is high turnover tied to driver shortages in long-haul trucking??? Check out this post recap from our friend Allan Rutter!
I'm a bit late to the party in discussing a recent The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine consensus study on truck driver compensation, safety and the contentious truck driver shortage. But I finally had some time to read some of the report itself and am impressed. I wanted to wait to spend more time with the document because two of the folks on the Consensus panel are folks I respect greatly--Caroline Mays, AICP of the Texas Department of Transportation and Jason Miller of the Michigan State University - Eli Broad College of Business. OverDrive has a good overview of the study and the reaction to it linked below. I also was encouraged to read the report by recent LinkedIn posts by never demure Wayne Cragg (https://lnkd.in/gf_z68iZ) and by Dr. Miller his own self (https://lnkd.in/g9mYQyyD). The study directed by Congress in the IIJA ("Pay and Working Conditions in the Long-Distance Truck and Bus Industries: Assessing for Effects on Driver Safety and Retention" found here https://lnkd.in/g7P5EfSj) rightly focuses on the unique features of the long-haul truckload market, which is different from less-than-truckload or shorter haul truck activity. The study finds that driver turnover doesn't equal a driver shortage and that the causes of high turnover in the long-haul TL market are driven by the "overall effect of the industry’s competitive structure, which compels carriers to employ cost-focused managerial strategies." Because of this, the study contended that "carriers in the long-distance [truckload] sector have come to believe there are chronic shortages of drivers because of the constant need to replace them during both expansions and contractions” in the market. As Dr. Miller suggests, you would do well to read this report yourself. #labor #trucking #truckdrivers #compensation #freight
