Yesterday, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop chaired the Convention of the South of Scotland at Maxwell House in the Dumfries Campus of the University of Glasgow. The meeting of key partners with an interest in the economic development of the South of Scotland continues to strengthen alignment between the Scottish Government, local authorities, and public sector organisations delivering in the South of Scotland – supporting effective partnership working and delivery across the public sector. The Convention considered current and future challenges and opportunities impacting on inclusive and sustainable economic growth – with a focus on transport both as an economic driver towards a green economy and as a means of reducing inequalities. ScotRail is set to enhance services on the West Highland Line with longer trains. From tomorrow (Tuesday, 11 March), ScotRail will operate seven-carriage trains between Glasgow and Crianlarich, and five-carriage trains between Crianlarich and Fort William. The improvements have been made possible due to the completion of platform extension works by Network Rail, which now allow the train operator to make better use of its Highland Explorer carriages. The use of active travel carriages had previously been restricted on services due to platform length limitations. These enhancements will provide more space for bicycles and luggage, and more seats for customers and active travel users, ensuring a more efficient and comfortable journey along the scenic West Highland Line.

NEWS: Investment in landmark cycle routes delivering record share of journeys by bike in Scotland. New traffic data collated by Cycling Scotland has revealed the growing success of two recently completed, landmark cycle routes in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and their impact in supporting more people to travel by bike for everyday journeys. The data is the clearest evidence yet that ???????? ???????????????? ???????????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ????????????????????????????, ???? ???????? ???????? ???????????? ??????????????: ?? ????% ???? ???????????????? on Glasgow’s Victoria Road now by bike – a new record cycling modal share for an urban street in Scotland. ?? 1,700 more cycle journeys recorded on Victoria Road in 48-hour survey period in September 2024 vs 2023 – ?? ????% ????????-????-???????? ???????????????? ???? ??????????????. ?? ??.??% ?????????????? ?????????? ?????????? recorded on Edinburgh’s City Centre West to East Link (CCWEL), which runs between Roseburn and the city centre. ?? 1,000 more bike journeys recorded on CCWEL in 48-hour survey period in January 2025 vs 2024 – ???? ????% ????????-????-???????? ???????????????? ???? ??????????????. In addition to record cycling modal share and high year-on-year growth, there is evidence of the wider impact of the new physically separated cycle lanes, with growth in cycling also measured on nearby streets which feed into Glasgow’s South City Way. Clear peaks in cycling during morning and evening rush hours also show how these new routes are supporting everyday journeys by bike, such as to work or school. Annalise, who cycles with her son to school along Glasgow’s South City Way: “It’s brilliant to have this and it makes such a difference. I’ve lived in other parts of the city that don’t have anything like this, and I didn’t cycle as much as I do now. We cycle together to school a few days a week, then I use the route the rest of the way to the centre. It saves me so much time.” Find out more: https://orlo.uk/MbaQa Transport Scotland | The City of Edinburgh Council | Glasgow City Council
