My brief interaction with the Auto Driver yesterday who dropped me at the Airport, made me realise something important. Irrespective of who you are, everyone needs a bit of appreciation. Appreciation has the power to evoke strong emotions. In our coaching engagements, I also act as an accountability partner for my clients. I appreciate them when they achieve their goals. Conversely, false appreciation can backfire. One can differentiate between appreciation and flattery. In your corporate roles, use the power of appreciation wisely and you will see magic happen. "My boss will never let me grow" - I felt stuck forever. . . After spending twelve years with an organization and an initial growth phase during which she cracked three promotions in the first eight years, she felt ignored over the last four years. My coaching conversations with her revealed a few patterns working against her. Some of them were her creations, while others were situational. She is now working on an action plan to get to her old self and days. Growth comes with its own set of issues. - It can make you complacent. - It can drive your supporters away. - It can create interpersonal challenges. We need to handle growth cautiously. While walking today, I saw someone running with headphones and a water bottle. I kept a steady pace. I walked past him when he slowed down. He sped up and ran past me before changing direction. My observation: Some like consistency, others like to sprint and cool off rhythm. Both methods are OK if it has the desired benefits for you. Careers are no different. Some like to be consistent, others like periods of highs and lows. - Consistency in volume of work, complexity, relationships, career-ladder growth and financial/compensation growth. - Highs and Lows across these factors. They maximize career growth during highs and focus on lifestyle & learning during low periods. In your career journey, you need to define? 1] WHAT to achieve? 2] WHY you want it 2] WHEN you want it and then decide HOW The pitfall of career planning is when people start with "HOW" without thinking through WHAT, WHY and WHEN.
