Yesterday, we learned about a temporary pause on permitting for renewable energy projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Today we learned that the pause may be lifted—an encouraging sign for developers and consultants navigating wetland and water permitting. Regulatory shifts like this highlight the importance of staying informed and prepared to adapt. As more guidance becomes available, we’ll continue tracking updates and sharing insights. If you have questions about what this means for your projects, let’s connect. https://hubs.li/Q035HR440

Remember that renewable project you were so ready to move forward, until the locals hit the brakes? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Community opposition can feel like a major roadblock, especially when locals are worried about things like property values or farmland being disrupted. And honestly? Those concerns are fair. Here’s the thing: even the most game-changing renewable project can come to a screeching halt if the community isn’t on board. It’s like speaking two languages; you're talking sustainability and clean energy, and they’re hearing disruption and uncertainty. So, how do you get everyone on the same page? Here are four tried-and-true ways to build trust, spark excitement, and keep your project moving forward: ???? Start the Conversation Early Nobody likes surprises, especially when it involves their backyard. So, don’t wait until shovels are ready to hit the ground. Host some town halls, set up a booth at local events, or even hop on a Zoom call to chat with the community. The earlier you start these conversations, the better. Transparency shows you’re listening, not steamrolling. ??? Use Tech to Read the Room Not every community will react the same way to a renewable energy project. That’s where our features, Solar Pulse and Wind Pulse, come in. They help you figure out which communities are more open to renewables and give you a feel for the local perception in your project area. Use tech to tackle concerns head-on and craft a strategy that speaks directly to what the locals care about most. ?? Show What’s in It for Them Let’s be real: people care about how a project will affect their lives. Will it bring new jobs? Improve local infrastructure? Boost tax revenue? Don’t just talk about the global benefits of clean energy; get specific about what this means for their town. When people see a win-win, they are more likely to get excited about your project. ?? Team Up with Local Heroes Who do people trust? Their neighbors, local leaders, and community organizations. Find those folks and get them on your side. They can be your biggest advocates, helping you connect with the community in an authentic and relatable way. A little grassroots love goes a long way. With the right tools and strategies, you can turn skeptics into supporters. Let us know how you’ve tackled community challenges. We’d love to hear your story. #RenewableEnergy #CommunityEngagement #EnergyDevelopment

The eastern hellbender, North America's largest salamander, may soon receive federal protection! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is proposing to list this fascinating aquatic species as endangered. Check out our environmental specialist, Jay Kaminski, PWS, MS, CERP's post to learn more about these unique amphibians and what this proposed listing could mean for their future!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to list the eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) as an endangered species. This salamander occurs in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The eastern hellbender is one of two hellbender subspecies in the United States. The other, the Ozark hellbender, is found in Missouri and Arkansas and was listed as endangered in 2011. In addition, the Missouri distinct population segment of the eastern hellbender was designated as endangered in 2021. Eastern hellbenders are the largest salamanders in North America, reaching lengths of up to 29 inches and living for as long as 30 years. They spend their entire lives in cool, clear, free-flowing streams and rivers, taking shelter beneath large, flat rocks. Because they breathe through their folded skin, maintaining clean, oxygen-rich water is essential to their survival. Their primary threats include sedimentation, poor water quality, disease, habitat loss, and collection for the pet trade.
