?? Update on Trans Youth Rights in California ?? The "Protect Kids of California Act," aptly renamed the "Restrict Rights of Transgender Youth" initiative by Attorney General Rob Bonta, failed to garner enough support to make it to the November ballot. This is a win for trans rights! In positive news, AB 1955 has been introduced (And is supported by TFSS). This bill aims to: ?? Ban schools from outing trans youth ?? Protect school staff ?? #TeamTFSS is proud to join California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus in our support of AB 1955, the Support Academic Futures & Educators for Today’s Youth Act or SAFETY Act. AB 1955 is a bill that would strengthen existing California protections against forced outings of LGBTQ+ students in schools; provide critical supports and resources for parents and families of LGBTQ+ students to support families in working towards family acceptance on their own terms; and provide additional protections to educators who face retaliatory actions from administrators and school boards for seeking to create an inclusive and safe school environment.. LGBTQ+ youth are currently being forcibly outed without their consent by schools across the country, putting their safety in jeopardy if they have unsupportive families and making it harder to find support and community in their schools. California is taking the step to ensure we allow LGBTQ+ youth to come out to them on their own terms. #TeamTFSS is continuing the fight for LGBTQ+ students rights throughout the month of May for Give OUT Day! That’s why we’re raising our fundraising goal to $25,000 for this important cause! We believe that all LGBTQ+ youth deserve access to learning environments that are safe and affirming and we’ll stop at nothing to achieve that! Tilly (she/they/fae), an LGBTQ+ high school student, said: “We tend to be bullied, and sometimes, we face adversity from our own schools. We spend a large portion of our lives in school. If we are accepted there, it makes a big impact on the rest of our life.” Tilly’s words illuminate the reality that the treatment of LGBTQ+ youth in schools extends far beyond when they leave the classroom. School can be a safe haven for LGBTQ+ youth with unsupportive families, a place where they can connect with a community like them, and an environment where they can explore their identity out in the world. We need to protect spaces like this so they can continue to support our youth.
