Fantastic to collaborate with Mark Carey and The Athletic to share our analysis of the evolution of the UK's football data & analytics landscape. We evaluated the personnel of analysis departments of clubs in the top four divisions of English football to explore some of the challenges they face in "building” best practice analytics processes to gain a competitive advantage. During our analysis we found that to build and implement a "best practice" analytics solution there are a number of key characteristics and associated challenges that disproportionately affect clubs outside Top 6 EPL teams. 1. Leadership buy-in and sustained investment in resources is essential: Top 6 EPL Clubs have ~2 times more analytics resources than lower EPL and Championship Clubs, with the gap only growing in lower divisions 2. Specific training and expertise are required to build models and translate insights to allow analysis to be understood by others at the club: Currently, <50% of Data Analysts in the top four divisions have specific technical training in data analytics, computer science, or mathematics?and <5% in other analysis roles 3. Stability in teams and personnel is crucial to create and sustain long-term impact: With technical data analysis expertise in high demand outside football, retention of quality talent is an increasing challenge for analysis departments, particularly outside top EPL clubs?where talent is moving on ~2 times faster As clubs chase a competitive advantage through analytics, they need to ensure they are focusing on building long-term buy-in and trust in models to sustain impact, as highlighted by Dan Pelchen: “Best-practice analytics is not creating the most ‘complex’ model or algorithm, it is?analyses that are trusted and adopted by decision-makers that ultimately have an impact?on their processes. Trust and understanding can empower more experts to use data daily, helping avoid biases and mitigating risk.” Well done to Ed Vickers-Willis, Daniel Cleggett, Atharva Suryavanshi and the entire Traits team on leading this comprehensive work. Please reach out to Dan Pelchen, Livio Bergamin or anyone from the team to learn more about the insights we uncovered in our analysis. https://lnkd.in/gkSpninB
