NEWS: Charlotte Hornets to Break Ground on New Basketball Performance Center -- The Charlotte Hornets will break ground in early 2025 on a state-of-the-art performance facility adjacent to the existing Spectrum Center. Designed by Populous, the 160,000-sf building will feature 100,000 sf of space for training, conditioning, and practice, as well as areas for recovery and rehabilitation. The Hornet's business operations will occupy 35,000 sf in the building, complemented by 2,500 sf of ground-level retail to activate the fan experience. Novant Health will also operate a sports medicine clinic. The 1.9 acre site will be leased to the Hornets annually for 99 years, with an additional 1.3 acres available for lease or purchase by the team within five years of the new center's completion. Catalyzing economic growth through urban renewal, the entire 3.2-acre parcel is envisioned as a vibrant destination for the entire region and beyond. With CAA ICON acting as strategic management consultant, the project is being delivered by a joint venture of Gilbane Building Company and R.J. Leeper Construction. NEWS: Colorado State University Begins Construction on ATLAS Laser Facility -- Colorado State University broke ground in October of 2024 on ATLAS, the Advanced Technology Lasers for Applications and Science facility in Fort Collins. Created in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fusion Energy Sciences program, the development is made possible by a $150 million public-private partnership with Marvel Fusion. A trio of ultra-high-power lasers that can be used separately or in combination will drive innovative discoveries in clean energy, medicine, and fundamental research. Preparing the next generation of scientists and technicians to participate in the fusion industry, the leading-edge building will enable both undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience with sophisticated instrumentation. Designed by SWBR , the 71,000-sf facility will incorporate over 7,500 cubic yards of concrete, including shielding walls five feet thick around the target bay. Vibration mitigation will be enhanced beneath the laser and target bays by a slab three feet thick. Offering labs and cleanrooms rated up to ISO 6 (Class 1000), the structure will feature advanced HVAC systems capable of maintaining strict temperature and humidity tolerances. Tetrad Corporation is serving as construction manager with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. as general contractor. Completion is expected in mid-2026. NEWS: Caltech Opens Resnick Sustainability Center -- Caltech opened the $148 million Resnick Sustainability Center in October of 2024 in Pasadena, Calif. Featuring transdisciplinary laboratories with specialized equipment, the 79,727-sf facility enables investigators and innovators from across the Caltech community to engage in collaborative discovery. The four-story structure currently houses four research hubs: --> The Solar Science and Catalysis Center includes a solar roof where photovoltaic devices can be evaluated under real-world conditions.? --> The Remote Sensing Center allows faculty and students to develop and guide satellites of different sizes for applications including environmental monitoring and space exploration. --> The Ecology and Biosphere Engineering Facility enables the cultivation, analysis, and manipulation of how diverse life-forms interact with their environments.? --> The Translational Science and Engineering Facility aims to accelerate the testing and scale-up of early-stage technologies. A high-bay space supports larger demonstration projects. The second floor advances Caltech's educational mission by providing undergraduate chemistry labs, as well as teaching labs and instructional settings for courses related to sustainability. Two 48-person active learning classrooms are linked by a retractable wall that can be pushed back to create a larger contiguous space. A soaring, timber-framed atrium offers a variety of range venues for formal and informal interaction. On track for LEED Platinum certification, the Resnick Sustainability Center has a high-performance curtainwall that leverages low-E glazing and shading fins to transmit natural light all the way to the basement level. Extensive rooftop photovoltaic arrays generate power for research and operations, complemented by advanced MEP infrastructure. The Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign was the architect for the project, which integrates construction materials with low embodied carbon, including a striking mass timber frame. NEWS: Torrey View by Breakthrough Opens in San Diego -- Breakthrough Properties celebrated the opening of a 510,000-sf life sciences campus in San Diego in October of 2024. Designed by Flad Architects, Torrey View by Breakthrough offers state-of-the-art wet labs for the development of novel therapies and technologies, as well as flexible workspaces and collaboration areas. An iconic tessellated envelope allows interior floor plates to be infused with natural light, maximizing occupant wellness and energy efficiency without compromising performance. A 25,000-sf hub with curated amenities provides a 400-person conference venue, a lounge, multiple dining options, and a sophisticated fitness suite. Certified LEED Gold, the sustainable complex features an expansive green plaza situated atop a partially sub-grade parking garage. Pfizer is leasing 230,000 sf of Class A research space spanning two buildings for a period of 15 years, and a third structure houses a 220,000-sf biosciences center for BD (Becton Dickenson), Charles River Laboratories, Actio Biosciences, and Architect Therapeutics have also established a presence at the campus. The project team included Clark Construction Group, Coffman Engineers, Michael Baker International, Heintges Consulting Architects & Engineers, A.O. Reed & Co., and tk1sc, now part of WSP. JLL served as leasing agent, and Bionic Landscape, Luma Lighting Design, Vision Systems, and Clark Pacific all contributed their expertise to the creation of Torrey View.
