“They’re on our left, they’re on our right, they’re in front of us, they’re behind us…they can’t get away this time.” - Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller Today marks the anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Chosin Reservoir. More than 30,000 service members from the United States alongside a coalition of troops from Allied nations fought their way through the harsh, frozen terrain of the man-made Chosin Reservoir while battling a force of over 120,000 Chinese soldiers. Ultimately, the Marines of 1st Marine Division, having fought to the complete exhaustion of their resources, dangerously low on ammunition, and with no chance of reinforcement, were forced to fight their way out of that frozen reservoir and towards the port at the Hungnam Perimeter. The Marines fought constantly throughout the 17 days of the battle and eventually, made their way to the port of Hungnam, where the Marines were able to complete their withdrawal alongside other UN troops and thousands of Korean refugees. 13 Medals of Honor were awarded during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, 10 of them to United States Marines. #USMC #MarinesoftheCorps #USMCHistory
