The Third Party Risk Association was created out of a necessity to build a community of like-minded third party risk professionals to allow for the sharing of best practices, exchanging of ideas, and influencing of an industry. This organization is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit. Activities in support of this purpose include, but are not limited to: - Promoting the value that third party risk professionals and practitioners add to their organizations; - Providing comprehensive professional, educational, and development opportunities, as well as standards and other professional practice guidance; - Researching, disseminating, and promoting to practitioners and stakeholders knowledge concerning third party risk and its appropriate role in control, risk management, and governance; - Educating practitioners and other relevant audiences on best practices in third party risk; and - Bringing together third party risk professionals and practitioners from all countries to share information, experiences, tools, and techniques. The organization was formed by Julie Gaiaschi & Jon Ehret on October 22, 2018 and is headquartered in Iowa.

Do you know how to manage 4th party risk? Keeping track of your 3rd party’s 3rd parties isn’t easy, but overlooking 4th parties can increase risk and weaken your organization’s risk management efforts. These 5 tips can help you manage 4th party risk more effectively: ?? Require Transparency: Your 3rd parties should disclose their material 3rd parties. To determine materiality of 4th parties, ask yourself: 1. Will the 4th party have access to or host my organization’s confidential data? 2. Will the 4th party have direct or indirect contact with my customers? 3. Will the 4th party support a critical product or service that my organization leverages? 4. Will the 4th party have a regulatory risk associated with the product/service provided? ?? Assess 3rd Party TPRM Practices: Review how your 3rd parties assess and monitor their 3rd parties. If their TPRM practices are weak, your risk exposure increases. ?? Use Contracts to Enforce Standards: Lock in strong TPRM obligations when onboarding 3rd parties to ensure your 3rd parties hold their 3rd parties accountable. ?? Address Weaknesses Quickly: If your 3rd party isn’t properly assessing its 3rd parties, act fast. Don’t wait for a crisis to react. ?? Know When to Walk Away: If a 3rd party’s 3rd party risks don’t align with your organization’s risk appetite, consider alternatives before signing a contract. If a contract is already signed and the 4th party risk is too high, request they move your data to a different 3rd party or consider disengaging with your 3rd party. ??
