Congratulations to TPH Academy alum Kirsten Simms??, who scored both the game tying and game winning goals to earn Wisconsin the NCAA women’s hockey national championship ?? A true champion - both in and beyond the game - Kirsten has always made time to connect with our student-athletes, whether after a big moment like her first goal for the U.S. women’s national team ???? in Kitchener ???? or at a TPH-wide virtual event. "We can't talk about International Women's Day--at least not in this country--without talking about Title IX..." That was my message to the boys and girls at TPH Academy when I joined them a couple years ago to celebrate the occasion. I feel lucky to have grown up in a country where young women are given the same educational opportunities (that includes participation in youth sports) as young men, thanks to Title IX. I also spoke about how important it was that the Oxford men's rowing team supported the women's team when we joined them to race The Boat Race on the Tideway in 2015, and how graciously they ceded the limelight to the women. If you are looking for a way to celebrate today, I invite you to consider this: How can you create space for someone else to perform--someone who might otherwise not have been given the opportunity to show what she can do?
