Reflecting on the Key Bridge Incident Causing Collapse – One Year Later ?? March 26 marks one year since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, when the M/V Dali struck the structure and closed the navigation channel to the Port of Baltimore. In that moment—and the many that followed—our core values were more than words on a wall. They were a call to action. Our Baltimore Agency team, led by David Chenowith, immediately jumped into action, notifying customers, port stakeholders, and partners about the closure and helping vessels reroute efficiently. While Baltimore paused, our vessel agents stepped up across the East Coast—handling diverted volumes and providing seamless support at ports in Philadelphia and Norfolk. David’s decades of leadership within the Port of Baltimore led to his appointment by the Governor’s office to serve on the Maryland Tough Baltimore Strong Alliance (MTBSA), enabling HOST to stay steps ahead. Thanks to his involvement, we provided clients with real-time updates, making our flash reports second to none. We also participated in Incident Command Center briefings, supplying critical data to port partners, the U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland Port Administration, and recovery teams. This included updates on cargo diversions, deep-draft vessel activity, and operational impacts—ensuring bulk and breakbulk cargo needs were voiced alongside container traffic and reinforcing the urgency of reopening the federal channel with minimal restrictions. Our Norfolk operations team also stepped up in a major way, working closely with the City of Norfolk and Nauticus to facilitate several diverted cruise vessel calls—many scheduled with almost no lead time. Their ability to adapt and deliver under pressure reflected our deep commitment to SERVICE and the power of strong local partnerships. Every team member who stepped in—on the docks, behind a desk, or on a call—played a critical role in keeping ships moving and customers supported.
