On National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Executive Director Melissa Peterman appeared on CBS8 to talk about our 3rd annual From the HeART community art display and its goal to uplift and show support for women and girls living with HIV/AIDS. https://lnkd.in/gUE5_5aG The Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services leads National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (#NWGHAAD). This year's theme for NWGHAAD 2025 is Hope, Health, and Healing: Overcoming Barriers to HIV/AIDS Treatment for Women and Girls. In the United States, about 23% of people living with HIV are women and, in 2021, women made up 20 percent of new diagnoses, according to CDC data. The highest number of new diagnoses were among women ages 25 to 44. Advances in testing, treatment, and prevention have resulted in progress toward the nation’s goal to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. Forty years ago, the USDA licensed the ELISA assay test, a method developed by Dr. Eva Engvall in the early 1970s, to detect HIV. This advancement in federal policy is due in large part to HIV and AIDS advocates, from patients to doctors, nurses, and medical researchers, to community members. Getting tested for HIV is as important today as it was back then, and Townspeople is as committed today as we were in 1984 to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS resources and to being a safe space for people living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego to turn to if they're experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. FROM THE HEART is now on display from our windows facing El Cajon Boulevard! https://lnkd.in/gafcJV4A Come by throughout March to see and read just over 90 handmade paper hearts contributed by Townspeople's staff, community, and supporters including San Diego Women's Affordable Housing Network, Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego, and REVISION Creative Workspace. Women and femmes living with HIV often experience isolation and stigma and face specific challenges around relationships, parenthood, and healthcare. As a minority of cases in San Diego County, the unique needs and experiences of HIV+ women and femmes in our community can be overshadowed.
