?? Protecting Truckee’s Future: Town Council Stands Against Federal Funding & Staffing Cuts ?? At the March 11th meeting, the Truckee Town Council took a firm stand to protect our community by unanimously adopting two resolutions opposing federal funding and staffing cuts that threaten wildfire mitigation, forest health, and essential public services. These cuts could have serious consequences—from increased wildfire risks due to reduced fuels reduction efforts, to restricted access to public lands, campground closures, and delays in critical infrastructure projects. They also jeopardize local programs that serve our seniors, families, and vulnerable populations. ?? Resolution 2025-15: Calls for the restoration of federal funding and staffing for wildfire prevention and forest health. Over $32 million has been invested locally in fire mitigation, but without federal partnership, our region faces greater wildfire threats. ?? Resolution 2025-16: Highlights the economic and social impacts of federal cutbacks, from lost jobs and potential campground closures to stalled local projects like the Pines to Mines trail, as well as reduced access to essential community services. Mayor Jan Zabriskie put it best: "It is unusual for a town council to engage in federal matters, but the overwhelming public concern made it clear that we must stand up for our community’s safety and resilience." Protecting Truckee’s forests and public lands is not a partisan issue—it’s a matter of life and safety. With wildfire season approaching and below-average snowfall increasing our risk, we need federal support now more than ever. Truckee is committed to advocacy and action. These resolutions will be shared with regional and federal representatives, and we will continue working alongside local partners to ensure our voices are heard.
