Dr. Lauren Pointer, Touro Gastroenterologist, explains to WVUE that rising colorectal cancer rates in younger adults led to the recommended screening age being lowered from 50 to 45. She stresses the importance of knowing your family history, as genetics, and lifestyle play significant roles in disease risk. Dr. Pointer also highlights various screening options, like colonoscopy, stool-based tests, and virtual colonoscopy, and urges everyone age 45 and older to schedule screening for earlier detection and better treatment outcomes.

Meet Makeba Jones, Touro Clinical Pharmacist, and our #WomensHistoryMonth spotlight. Makeba shared, "In 2005 I was a Director of Pharmacy for a small LTAC Hospital. Our department was small, and my Technician and I stayed not knowing what Hurricane Katrina would bring, because of our amazing contributions I was invited to the Oprah Winfrey Show. They came to the hospital interviewed me, went to my home that was destroyed, and gave us so many wonderful gifts to thank us for service."

  • Meet Dr. Shradha Ahuja, Touro Hematologist and Oncologist. Ahuja shared "as oncologists, we are allowed into a person’s life at their most vulnerable time, and we are trusted. A cancer diagnosis can seem scary, but it does not have to be. When I first meet my patients, I want them to be able to clearly understand their disease diagnosis and all available treatment options. I want to be able to provide my patients with the best possible care, while balancing their individual needs and goals, and being respectful of their wishes."
