Let’s get technical. When a bullet enters the pane of glazing, a tremendous amount of energy must be dispersed to stop the bullet. When a bullet meets the first layer on the "threat" side of the glass, the transferred energy may cause glass fragments on the secure side—this is spalling. Some materials produce more spall than others. Some, like acrylic and actual glass, can produce a significant spall. Other materials, such as laminated polycarbonate, typically produce no spall at all. Spalling is an important detail to consider when choosing bullet-resistant glass. We’re here to help you keep your people safe, so read our blog to learn more and reach out to us with your questions.

Until recently, few barriers prevented the attackers from entering schools—something the glass industry is well aware of. One of our passions is educating people on correctly using ballistic security products to protect what matters most. That’s why we fully endorse the ASTM F3561 Standard Test Method for Forced-Entry Resistance of Fenestration Systems after Simulated Active Shooter Attack. The goal of ASTM F3561 is to increase protection and provide a comprehensive and repeatable test method. The test simulates forced entry after the glass has been shot, but it’s not a ballistic rating. This means products that comply with the ASTM F3561 do not stop bullets. In areas where people are present, bullet-resistant glass should be used to protect the people present. As we’ve always said, a layered security strategy is the best way to balance priorities without sacrificing effectiveness.

A bulletproof glass entry system consists of ballistic windows, framing, and bullet-resistant doors. These systems can be very different from their non-rated counterparts. If you’re an architect working on a ballistic entryway, it’s important to understand the unique materials that might affect your project.
