In early 2024, we received confirmation from the USDOT Safe Streets 4 All (SS4A) Grants Team that Crash Certified Vehicle Barriers qualify under the SS4A Implementation Grant as a Safety Improvement, which means cities are eligible to use these grants to implement crash certified vehicle barriers as a pedestrian safety improvement. Why aren't we discussing crash certified vehicle barriers as a solution to pedestrian safety in these planning and design stages? In order to qualify for an SS4A Implementation Grant, cities must first complete a Safety Action Plan (which the grant also pays for). Per the USDOT website, the SS4A grant has awarded more than $2.6 Billion to more than 1,600 communities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico since 2022.
