Field Day Recap! ???? More than 250 grower licensees, retailers and media partners joined our Mid- to Late-Season Table Grape Field Day last week at the Center for Innovation in Wasco, California. This event marked a milestone in our company’s history as we unveiled the Epic Crisp? and Applause? brands while offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at our commercial, semi-commercial and pipeline grape varieties. In addition to exploring innovative varieties, attendees had the unique opportunity to witness the future of agriculture with Tortuga's cutting-edge automated robots harvesting grapes in Sun World's fields, a first-time experience for many. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the event successful. The enthusiasm and engagement from our grower community and partners made this an unforgettable day! #FieldDay #GrapeSeason #APPLAUSE #EPICCRISP #AUTUMNCRISP #agtechnology #technology

    Chief Science Officer at Sensonomic

Robot harvesters may be coming for table grapes. They use cameras with artificial intelligence to select and cut bunches based on color and size. One example is from Tortuga AgTech. While there may be some limitations to the existing technology, Sensonomic is excited to use it to supercharge our yield estimation and harvest planning algorithms. First, let’s talk about the drawbacks. An obvious one is that the machines are slow. A pair of people can harvest up to 180 boxes (8.2 kg/18 lb) per day, which I’m guessing is much faster. To make up for it, the robots can harvest 24 hours a day. Harvest rate also depends on whether trimming and packing is done in the field. The robot does neither, so grapes must be moved to a central packhouse. This can take a long time as the machine can only carry three boxes. Here is where four-wheeled, GPS-enabled carrier robots from Burro could come in. They could ferry boxes between the harvesters and the packhouse. Something will need to be done about softening the impact when transferring the fruit to the boxes to avoid damage. Cost is going to be another factor. It’s no surprise that robot harvesting began in strawberries, where margins are likely higher. How low will costs need to go? California grape pickers get paid $21/hour. Using a harvest rate of 180 boxes per eight hour day, the cost of harvest is $2/box. To outcompete the human harvesters, a robot is going to have to cost less. Viewed another way, doing a very basic extrapolation of the 24-hour harvest rate from the video (260 boxes/day), the robot is going to have to cost less than $520/day. These numbers may be nonsense, but they indicate the type of calculations needed to compare costs. There may be an additional cost of restructuring the canopy. Vines may need to be retrained for the harvester to work efficiently. Elsewhere growers have transformed apple orchards into fruit walls for robot picking or olive groves into hedgerows for mechanical harvesting. Notwithstanding their costs and constraints, we at Sensonomic welcome our new robot overlords. For one thing, we can feed their automated calculations of bunch and berry size into our algorithms for predicting final volumes at various stages of development. What’s perhaps even more promising is that we can guide the teams of harvester and carrier robots with our harvest planning algorithms. Using our predictions of sugar accumulation, we can instruct the harvest teams on which blocks to go to at which times to ensure a continuous flow of high quality fruit to the packhouse. Field data can be used to update plans in real time. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter if the communication is with people or robots. Sensonomic’s algorithms can be used in either case to generate accurate yield predictions and execute an efficient harvest. Achieving these objectives will reduce costs and extract more value from harvested grapes. Sign up to our mailing list: https://eepurl.com/gaXLkr

Thank you Sun World International for hosting and supporting us, and thank you Ben Palone and all the growers attending for your excitement and feedback! It's clear that labor availability is a massive issue in table grapes and we're excited to be pioneering a robotic solution.

Great #fielddemo event today in Wasco CA. Sun World International had their annual field day showcasing their latest varieties. Adding some high-tech to this field day was Tortuga AgTech, demoing their machine for table grape harvesting. There’s lots of help needed for table grape harvesting. From the 2018 census data, hand labor harvesting accounted for ~30 MILLION hours to harvest a total of ~87,000 acres of table grapes. That’s a lot of hours ripe (horrible farm pun intended) for automation solutions. The tortuga machine is the first I’ve seen in table grape harvesting. #agtech #tablegrapes #innovation

101,207! Yesterday, two crews of Tortuga “Model F” robots picked over 100,000 berries in a single shift on one of our customer farms, The Summer Berry Company. We did this with 96% accuracy — better than humans at detecting ripeness and avoiding bruising. This single-shift milestone is the outcome of a massive jump in robot performance this year. We’ve 3X’d our picking volumes from 2023 and set records every month (nearly every week). This latest record surpassed the previous record – set 6 days earlier at THE NEW FOREST FRUIT CO. Here’s a photo of our robots about to be “put to bed” in their containers after a long day of work. Congratulations to the on-site teams, and we expect more records to fall in the coming months!?

Farmers face mounting challenges, from climate change to labor shortages. The physically demanding work is becoming less appealing, leading to fewer hands on the fields. However, advanced automated AI robotics are revolutionizing agriculture. These innovations promise to ease the burden, increase efficiency, and ensure sustainable farming. The future of agriculture is transforming, offering hope to struggling farmers. Tortuga AgTech Co-Founder and CEO, Eric Adamson joined Orbia's Corporate Vice President, Innovation & Ventures, Shai Albaranes in an exciting Expand Your Horizons episode about advanced farming with AI robotics. "Your robots can pick fruit, but can they trim our plants?" We've gotten this question from growers for years, and we can now say - YES! Many types of fruiting plants need trimming. Some, like strawberries, grow shoots (called "runners") that would help a wild plant grow, but are targets for pests and wasted energy on a commercial farm. Growers want to trim these runners, but labor shortages and costs make the job harder to get done. By applying our frontier AI Robotics?and making some minor tweaks, we have now proven we can precisely trim runners! With thoughtful effort, we believe this will help us develop trimming services across multiple crops. But first, we'll aim to cut runners at a farm scale starting next summer season.

A quick time-lapse of Tortuga's UV-C service at THE NEW FOREST FRUIT CO. in the UK. In the past few years, agronomists have shown that you can prevent powdery mildew outbreaks by shining the right amount of UV-C light on plants at night. Tortuga's robots shine UV-C light on the plants while driving themselves autonomously up and down the rows. Operators change the robots to the next available row and do it all over again - treating a 2.5Ha glasshouse in ~4-5 hours. The result is happy plants and a very aesthetically pleasing robot "flying formation!" Glasshouses can have different "rail" configurations (the metal pipes on the ground), and because Tortuga's robots drive themselves on their own wheels, they can operate over the top of rails, with no rails, or with one wheel inside the rail and one wheel out. This flexibility is critical to adapt to all the many different farms that exist. The same robots were picking strawberries outside in the fields the very next morning. https://lnkd.in/gR_2ANP9 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/dB9ktYM and https://lnkd.in/gVfw8Hib

As AI dominates today’s headlines, we’re excited to share our philosophy on AI in robotics in our latest blog post. We call the approach Essential AI - a specialized, dynamic, flexible, and efficient way to solve real-world, industrial-scale problems. The AI Renaissance, which generates general artificial intelligence, is here today, but we need an AI Industrial Revolution to truly automate the “dull, dirty and dangerous” tasks that underpin our society. https://lnkd.in/gpKcXq82 Special thanks to Brian Heath and Tim Brackbill for helping co-author this blog and Avidan Ross from Root Ventures and Leo Polovets from Humba Ventures for their invaluable feedback.
