Q3 Market Review: U.S. stocks continued their strong performance from the first half of the year, with many major indices nearing or hitting record highs as the third quarter approached its end. However, these gains were accompanied by a surge in volatility not seen since the COVID-19 pandemic. In September, the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates, fulfilling expectations that had been building for months. This marked the first rate cut since 2020, prompted by easing core inflation. Meanwhile, developed equity markets outside the U.S. posted gains, and emerging markets also saw modest increases for the quarter. In the bond market, U.S. Treasuries saw price increases, pushing the 10-year yield below 4%. On September 18, the Federal Reserve lowered the federal funds rate by half a percentage point to a range of 4.75%–5%. Policymakers cited economic uncertainty and rising unemployment as reasons for the larger-than-expected cut. This was the first rate cut since the COVID-related market upheaval in March 2020. The decision came as inflation fell to its lowest level since 2021, with the August core consumer price index—excluding volatile food and energy prices—rising 3.2% compared to the previous year.
