The origins of the Purple Heart trace back to the American Revolutionary War. Badge of Military Merit (1782): The precursor to the Purple Heart was the Badge of Military Merit, established by General George Washington on August 7, 1782. It was awarded for "singularly meritorious action" and was intended to recognize uncommon gallantry and extraordinary fidelity and essential service. Only three soldiers are known to have received this badge. Reestablishment (1932): The Badge of Military Merit fell into disuse after the Revolutionary War and was not awarded for many years. In 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, the Army reintroduced the decoration as the Purple Heart. General Douglas MacArthur played a significant role in its revival, and the new medal featured Washington's profile and his coat of arms. World War II: The criteria for the Purple Heart evolved over time. Initially, it was awarded to those wounded or killed in the Army, but it expanded to include all branches of the U.S. military after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Vietnam War to Present: The Purple Heart became a symbol of sacrifice and bravery in subsequent conflicts, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is now awarded to any member of the U.S. armed forces who has been wounded or killed by enemy action. Significance and Legacy: The Purple Heart remains one of the most recognized and respected military decorations, symbolizing the bravery and sacrifice of those who have been injured or lost their lives in service to their country.
