February is Black History Month. As an agency we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion not just this month, but every single day. We have invested in DEI training for our staff and continue to hold monthly DEI committee meetings. We believe that individuals have a unique value and should be treated equally according to their human rights. “Black History Month was unofficially started in 1915, 50 years after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That year, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALH) was founded to research and promote the achievement of Black Americans and other people of African descent. Fast-forward to 1926, the second week of February — which coincides with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass — the ASALH launched national Negro History Week. Over time, this week evolved into what we know today as Black History Month.”

The new year brings many exciting changes to Toomey! ? We are excited to announce Jennifer Francisco, our current Chief Operating Officer, as the new Interim Executive Director! Jen has been employed with Toomey/Charities for over 20 years, during which she has held various roles in direct care, supervision, compliance, and management. These experiences have equipped her well for this position, and we all look forward to working with her. Jen's compassion and dedication to both the individuals we serve and the staff we employ are remarkable, and she will be a great asset in her new role. Meet Board Member: Maria Zumpano Maria joined the board at Toomey because she is passionate about children and family. She was amazed at the mission and vision of Toomey, along with the continuum of community-based clinical treatment programs and individualized residential and other therapeutic services that it provides to a diverse range of individuals in the community. She started her career in public accounting and then shifted to the legal sphere. Today, she is an attorney at Bousquet Holstein PLLC where she represents businesses and the individuals that run them in the areas of business formation and structure, transactions and compliance, tax planning, strategy and advocacy, and business succession planning. In her spare time, Maria is an Adjunct Professor at the Madden School of Business at Le Moyne College where she teaches accounting. She is a huge Syracuse Orange and Yankee fan, and she loves baking. Toomey's Executive Director, Tiffany Teeter, and Director of Administration, Samantha Stam, had a blast spreading candy AND kindness on Friday at Cicero's Trunk or Treat event! We not only handed out tasty treats, but we also spread our message of kindness, especially towards those who are different from us.
