ADHD and Youth Sports: How to Help Your Child Succeed Link to the full article located at the bottom of this summary The article "ADHD and Youth Sports: How to Help Your Child Succeed" by Katey Davidson, MScFN, RD, CPT, and medically reviewed by Nathan Greene, PsyD, provides an overview of how sports can benefit children with ADHD. ADHD, affecting approximately 8.8% of children under 17, often involves symptoms like inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, which can impact self-esteem, academics, and social skills. The article suggests that different types of sports may suit children with ADHD differently. Individual sports such as wrestling and swimming can provide one-on-one focus, while team sports offer socialization opportunities. Open-skill sports like basketball and soccer may help with attention, whereas closed-skill sports like swimming are better for managing hyperactivity. Outdoor sports, particularly those in "green spaces," are noted for added benefits. When choosing a sport, it’s advised to consider a child’s preferences and unique needs. Sports that involve continuous movement, little downtime, and clear objectives (e.g., soccer, basketball) are generally beneficial, while sports with frequent pauses, like baseball, may be less ideal. The article emphasizes the importance of finding supportive coaches and not pressuring children about performance, as this can help build confidence and self-esteem. Davidson also explains that sports are not a treatment for ADHD but can complement traditional therapies. Benefits of sports participation include improved physical fitness, social skills, self-esteem, and focus. Ultimately, engaging children in selecting sports they enjoy is key to sustaining interest and achieving positive outcomes. Source: Davidson, K., & Greene, N. (2022). Physical activity serves as a powerful catalyst for building social relationships, bringing together individuals who share a common interest in fitness or sports. Engaging in group activities, whether team sports, fitness classes, or community runs, fosters camaraderie and creates a sense of belonging. These shared experiences enhance social skills, as participants learn to communicate, collaborate, and support one another. Additionally, the confidence gained from improving physical abilities often translates into stronger self-esteem, encouraging individuals to engage more openly with others. Over time, these connections can evolve into lasting friendships, enriching both social lives and personal well-being through shared experiences and mutual encouragement. How have your experiences with physical activity helped you build friendships or improve your social skills? https://lnkd.in/eaYGZDYF

At Tomorrow's Champions, we believe that sports are a powerful tool for developing leadership, teamwork, and confidence in young people. A study by Ernst & Young found that 96% of women in the C-suite played sports at some level, with 55% having competed at the university level. These statistics highlight the vital role that athletic participation plays in shaping future leaders, especially for young women. By encouraging youth to engage in sports, we are not only promoting physical well-being but also nurturing the next generation of trailblazers in business and beyond. Our mission is to provide access, support, and opportunities for all youth to thrive through sports, helping them build the skills they need to excel both on and off the field.
