This was an exciting week for Toledo as we became the first city outside of Columbus to host the Ohio Economic Development Association’s annual conference and set a record attendance! The Ohio Economic Development Association hosted its first annual conference outside of Columbus this week in Toledo and set a record attendance! What an awesome opportunity to show off our city to statewide friends and partners leading change across our communities. I was honored to be accepted to co-lead a presentation with my colleague and Board Chair Jennifer Van Horn about Toledo Design Collective’s Resident-driven planning work in Toledo. Over 20 years of service, TDC’s community engagement approach proves that when you put the voices of neighbors and local businesses and stakeholders at the forefront of planning and design, the result is hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in reversing harmful public policy and infrastructure trauma that leads to jobs, improved neighborhoods and housing conditions, better impacts on social determinants of health, and an enhanced sense of place and community. In short, when you start with voices of the people, you make people’s lives better through good design. I’m proud of Toledo and extra proud that the City of Toledo’s Director of Economic Development (and TDC intern alum!) Brandon Sehlhorst was chosen as this year’s Economic Developer of the Year! I can’t think of a more deserving individual. Brandon is consistently hard working, thoughtful, humble, and innovative. Through his leadership, plans don’t just sit on a shelf, they get actualized and implemented in ways that make our city a better place to live, work, and play. I didn’t think to take pictures, so many thanks to my friends Keith Instone (TDC Board alum) and Sally Gladwell (TDC Board Rock Star) for sharing a few photos of Jen and I sharing our work. What an honor! #economicdevelopment #urbanplanning #urbandesign #communityengagement #ohio #toledo

Happy 10th Birthday to the Glass City Dog Park! TDC has been proud to partner with the group since its founding. TDC co-founder, current Board member, and retired architect, Bob Seyfang, supported the park's initial designs. In preparation for the 10-year anniversary, Bob worked with our summer intern, Roman Marra of Toledo to update the site drawings. Roman was one of three co-ops serving at TDC this summer. Roman?Marra is a student and summer intern from Toledo, Ohio. He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from Miami University and is currently pursuing a master's degree in architecture at the University of Michigan. The Glass City Dog Park is one of many community projects TDC has been proud to support with our services and giving students unique opportunities to get hands on experience working with our community. #dogparks #urbandesign #studentexperience

TDC has had a blast this past week working with our partners at AIA Toledo Chapter and Imagination Station, Toledo's Science Center to bring interactive projects to the Cardboard: Build Outside the Box exhibit!! Over the course of three different workshops, we offered area families hands-on opportunities to learn about and reimagine how cities are designed. Along with an invigorating talk about Toledo history with local historian Tedd Long from holytoledohistory.com, AIA and TDC staff and Board members delved into the past, present, and future through the simple means of cardboard to spark imagination and innovation into the next generation of urban designers and architects! Many thanks to our friends and partners at the Imagination Station for hosting this brilliant and fun exhibition! Be sure to check out Cardboard: Build Outside the Box before it closes on September 2! #urbandesign #partnership #collaboration #imagination #cardboardcity

This has been a long time coming, but Toledo finally has new options for outdoor seating downtown! TDC is proud to have played a role in making Toledo's first parklets possible through our PARK(ing) Day event in 2023. We're gearing up to bring this global movement back downtown on Friday, September 20 to celebrate the creation of more walkable, accessible public spaces and pedestrian experiences. We'd love for you to join us! There are a lot of ways to get involved - join in the fun and sponsor or design you own parklet, join our planning committee and work with other volunteers to help make it happen, or volunteer on the day of the event! All the information you need to participate in PARK(ing) Day 2024 is at https://lnkd.in/gWGamzvJ #parkingday #toledo #ohio #parklets #urbanism #urbanplanning #urbandesign

We were excited to welcome The Arts Commission’s 2024 Young Artists at Work cohort in the TDC studio today. This program has exposed area high school youth to the arts and creative careers for 30 years through paid summer apprenticeships. Today we talked about employing creative processes in urban planning and design to help drive more equitable and sustainable solutions in social and civic infrastructure. Excited to see what great work will come from #YAAW this summer!

We are thankful to have hosted the City of Toledo’s Human Relations Commission's June meeting at TDC yesterday! Toledo is lucky to have such a passionate, positive, knowledgeable, and supportive group of citizen and civic leaders working to connect across sectors to support empowered youth, neighborhoods, social justice initiatives, and those working to end violence in our community. TDC enjoyed the opportunity for Studio Director Ryan A. Bunch to share our history, work, and impact in Toledo and to talk about the role of urban planning and design in public health and public safety initiatives. As always, the solutions are in working better together and supporting each other in the multiple efforts it takes to solve complex problems. Thank you to Commissioner Caryn Maloney, Chair Erin Baker, and Neighborhoods Chair Jon Dorcely for arranging this opportunity and hosting an engaging dialogue! #toledo #urbanplanning #urbandesign #publicsafety #publichealth #collaboration

We had an inspiring day at #Toledo’s inaugural #ActivateInnovate Conference at the newly renovated Toledo Innovation Center (formerly The Jefferson Center). TDC Studio Director, Ryan A. Bunch moderated a panel on Innovation in Education featuring Brooke Schlageter, M.Ed, PhD of Partners in Education, Samuel Chang of Midstory, and Dave Gierke of Toledo School for the Arts. As the community gathered to celebrate and discuss the future of our city, it was inspiring to see and hear the many ways TDC’s work showed up in conversations and presentations throughout the day! Thank you to the organizers and thoughtful leaders who shared their passion to keep building a better city for the future. #innovation #education #urbanplanning #urbandesign #toledo #youwilldobetterintoledo

After years of rooting for the Jefferson Center to become so many things it was an honor to get to stand on a stage inside of it’s wonderfully renovated body and discuss innovative thoughts and ideas in and for Toledo. Thank you Keith Instone and Brandy Alexander for organizing this summit of minds and for inviting me to participate. I had so much fun hanging and talking with Samuel Chang, Dave Gierke, and Brooke Schlageter, M.Ed, PhD about the current and future states of education. It was fabulous and inspiring to see Toledo Design Collective’s work and influence referenced and reflected in many presentations and conversations throughout the day. I’m proud for the opportunity to represent this organization always. The Mayor’s speech summed up well the two Toledo’s that exist, the glass half full vs the glass half empty. The truth is, I think we’re both - two things can be true at once. There are great things happening in this City but we have a long way to go to be contemporary and innovative. My friend Dustin Hostetler shared a quote from Bruce Mau recently that said, “As designers our job is to be critical but not cynical.” I’ve been thinking a lot about that because we often conflate the two, but that’s not accurate. Unfettered positivity does us no good. It can actually be quite harmful. Rather, being critical is an act of positivity because it shows how we want to be better. As an advocate for the nonprofit sector in Toledo, I know first hand that we have some of the most brilliant minds in the region if not in the nation working to solve and innovate our toughest problems. Yet, given the structure of the sector, it’s incredibly challenging to be innovative while trying to make make ends meet and keep the lights on to achieve basic services. One of the solutions is more flexible dollars from the philanthropic community that are based on trust in the people, minds, and leadership of organizations who are poised and ready to bring forward thinking innovations in the sector into action locally. As the Jefferson Center evolves into the Toledo Innovation Center, I hope it becomes a place where the for-profit, nonprofit, and emerging tech sectors come together to foster collaboration, advocacy, and experimentation so that we can truly activate innovation not just in some places, but all across Toledo and for everyone. #activateinnovate #innovation #education #design #advocacy #urbanplanning #urbandesign #toledo #youwilldobetterintoledo
