CMS OMH Celebrates the 33rd Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act Throughout July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) celebrates the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). Enacted on July 26, 1990, the ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. During this observance CMS OMH highlights the unique health care challenges and barriers faced by those living with a disability.? 61 million adults in the United States have some type of disability, with the most prominent disabilities being mobility (serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs) and cognition (serious difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions). Individuals living with disabilities face poorer overall health outcomes, including increased likelihood of?obesity (41.6%), diabetes (15.9%), and depression (43%) Additionally, individuals living with disabilities face barriers to care, with 1 in 4 adults with disabilities not having access to a usual health care provider and 1 in 5 adults with disabilities not having access to a routine check-up in the past year. This puts those individuals living with disabilities at increased risk for poor health outcomes. During ADA 33rd Birthday Month, CMS OMH is highlighting how you can help address these barriers and disparities impacting individuals living with disabilities. The anniversary of the ADA offers us an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring people with disabilities have access to quality health care services and share resources providers can use to help empower individuals living with disabilities. Resources:? Visit CMS OMH’s Improving Access to Care for People with Disabilities webpage to find tools and resources that can help you improve services and help patients understand their rights. This webpage is also available in Spanish. Download CMS OMH’s Getting the Care You Need: Guide for People with Disabilities, now available in eight languages and in Braille. Review the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Disparities in Medicare Fee-For-Service Beneficiaries data snapshot to learn more about racial and geographic ASD disparities among those enrolled in Medicare fee-for-service. Download the How to Improve Physical Accessibility at Your Health Care Facility resource, which helps health care providers, staff, and administrators in a variety of outpatient settings improve the accessibility of their health care facility.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is a powerful reminder: "It's time to prioritize mental health in the workplace." Did you know that 92% of employees face mental health challenges impacting their work? I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a company like Toivoa where we’re not just talking about prioritizing mental health—we’re actively working on real solutions for employers and employees. Today, I'll take a run, hug my kids, and continue working on the first fully accessible digital therapeutic solution for mental health and disabilities with our incredible early-adopter corporate partners. It's amazing to see how business can truly be a force for good. Whether it's a small step or a groundbreaking corporate initiative, we all have a role to play in supporting each other, both in and out of the workplace. Let's make mental health a priority for all. ?? #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #Accessibility #DoGoodThings #WorkplaceWellbeing #Toivoa Tarkenton Will Adams Laura Randa, MPA

When it comes to inclusivity, considering the accommodations required by individuals with disabilities is important, but it is only the first step. In order to genuinely support individuals with disabilities, we need to know the best way to do so. And how do we find that out? We should simply ask them. By actively involving individuals with disabilities and empowering them to express their perspectives, we build an inclusive society. The Gallup Coach Webcast Series has a very interesting episode about this exact topic. In it, Dr. Jennifer Camota Luebke touches on disability-inclusive workplace culture and a focus on strength instead of disability. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are not just buzzwords—they are fundamental pillars for shaping a workplace where everyone feels valued and can thrive. Let's delve deeper into what these concepts truly mean: ???Diversity encompasses the myriad of differences among individuals, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, and disability. Embracing diversity means recognizing and valuing these differences as unique strengths that enrich our collective experience. ???Equity means ensuring that everyone has access to the same opportunities and support, regardless of their background. Instead of treating everyone exactly the same, equity involves giving each person what they need to succeed. ???Inclusion involves creating a sense of belonging. Inclusive workplaces prioritize listening to marginalized voices, amplifying their contributions, and dismantling biases that may exist in the structures of the company. By fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, we create a workplace where everyone can bring their best selves to work and where innovation and creativity can flourish. ?? Join us in building a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed! #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture #Toivoa

Challenging stereotypes! People tend to have a preconceived notion about what a person with a disability looks like. But the truth is, no two individuals with disabilities are the same. Symptoms vary widely, and not everyone experiences them in the same way or to the same degree. For example: some people with developmental disabilities may have tremors, others don’t. Some may not have a full range of motion while others can only move certain parts of their body. When we accept everyone's differences, we create a welcoming environment. ???At Toivoa, we respect each person's uniqueness. That is what helps us understand their specific needs and abilities better. #Toivoa #DisabilityAwareness #disability #Accessibility #Inclusion #Diversity #Empowerment #DisabilityAdvocacy #EqualOpportunity
