We’re thrilled to share that Tohono Chul took home the TEP Social Impact Award at the Tucson Metro Chamber’s 2024 Copper Cactus Awards last Friday! ????? This award reflects how much heart we’ve put into enhancing our gardens, events, programs, and mission. These efforts have resulted in a 10-fold increase in children’s visits and a 62% boost in overall attendance in just two years. To everyone who has strolled our trails, admired our gardens, supported a fundraiser, become a member, attended an event, dined at the Bistro, enrolled in a workshop, or brought their kids to explore nature with us—this award is for YOU. Your support allows us to join hands with our community and protect this little desert corner for future generations. ?? We want to express our gratitude to our hardworking staff, dedicated volunteers, trusted board members, generous sponsors, and the entire Tohono Chul community—the members, donors, visitors, artists, critters, and flowers alike. ???? A big thank you to the Tucson Metro Chamber, Tucson Electric Power, and everyone who helped make this achievement possible. Here's to another year of being your community oasis! ??

Meet Jack Dash, Gardens Manager at Tohono Chul! ???? Jack is a horticulturist and writer with a deep passion for native plants and sustainable landscaping. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he now calls Tucson home and has immersed himself in the unique cultural and ecological landscape of the Arizona-Sonora Borderlands for the past nine years. With a wealth of experience, including roles at Desert Survivors Native Plant Nursery and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and serving as President of the Tucson Chapter of the Arizona Native Plant Society, Jack brings a decade of expertise in native plants to Tohono Chul. He's also an accomplished author, with a book on biodiversity gardening set to be published in 2025. Since joining us this spring, Jack has already made significant improvements to our gardens. He’s leading efforts to create new themed spaces, remove non-native plants, and clear unhealthy plants for new growth. His vision and dedication are truly transforming our landscapes. Beyond his work with plants, Jack co-created Atascosa Borderlands, a project blending botanical surveys, oral histories, and photography to explore the environmental and social changes in the Arizona Borderlands. Jack's passion and expertise are invaluable as we continue to nurture a deep reverence for the Sonoran Desert's cultural and natural ecology. ??? ?? Here's Jack in action, planting a young ironwood tree near Tohono Chul's entrance, nurturing the future of our gardens!
