Thank you Eric Richardson for your continued partnership on this important work.
In conventional truck cabs drivers cannot see for up to 15 feet in front of them which can lead to fatalities and serious injuries to vunerable road users. In fact over 500 people died on US roads in 2021 where a driver hit them while directly in front of them. In London they have mandated a Direct Vision Standard but in the US Direct Vision is still a relatively unaddressed issue. This is why Together for Safer Roads has done significant work with public and private fleets to research and publish studies and reports that not only highlight the issue but also how US based fleets can focus on this problem. The Together for Safer Roads 5 star rating system is a ground breaking effort to measure truck visibility ans to assist fleets in identifying trucks with the most limited direct vision for driver training and technology retrofit decision making. The Together for Safer Roads Direct Vision Transition guide helps to identify trucks that are currently available and under development that provide the driver with better visibility. It also provides for some case studies and other benefits of direct vision trucks. These documents and a digital guide on how to measure your trucks can be found at https://lnkd.in/ekNKJkD2 Together for Safer Roads along with panelists and breakout session participants will discuss this work and what cities such as NYC and Boston are doing to improve driver visibility and direct vision options at the NYC Vision Zero Forum coming up this Wednesday October 30 in Queens NY.

Nicolas Letendre, CEO Letenda, and Chance Parker, Regional Sales Manager Bollinger Motors, will be joining our Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum on 10/30 in NYC (Queens Theatre) as part of the breakout session “What Can You See? A Sneak Peek at the New Boston Visibility RFI.” With a growing interest in Direct Vision and increasing visibility from the driver’s seat, the City of Boston has issued an innovative Request for Information (RFI) asking vehicle manufacturers (OEMS) to provide insights into how they plan to downsize, rightsize, electrify, and increase the direct vision of their product lines. In this workshop, talk with governments, vehicle operators and manufacturers who are on the forefront of the transformation to safer, greener vehicles and discuss strategies and opportunities for cities and private companies to create achievable direct vision standards, specifications for future vehicle purchases, and develop implementation plans and timelines for transitions to safer fleets. Join us on 10/30 at Queens Theatre, along with our co-hosts NYC Citywide Administrative Services, as we honor the work of policy experts, government officials, public and private sector fleet stakeholders, road safety advocates, and safety technology companies. The National Safety Council’s Road to Zero Coalition has published an important new report — “Massive Hazards: How Bigger, Heavier Light Trucks Endanger Lives on American Roads” — which evaluates the research on safety risks of oversize vehicles, and offers contributions from experts across the road safety field on how to mitigate them. TSR is proud to have contributed to this timely and critical resource. Congratulations to Road to Zero Senior Program Manager Julia Kite-Laidlaw and the entire NSC team, as well?as everyone who contributed to this important new publication.
