Her work is simply incredible, and she was as funny, engaging, and down-to-earth as she is talented. The Janus et Cie showroom in downtown Bethesda was the perfect setting for Home & Design Magazine's event. Their outdoor furniture is nothing short of exquisite, and this was easily one of the best HDM events I’ve attended. Everyone raved about it! We were all in awe of Cathy’s journey—40 years in business, five offices, and a team of 40 crafting some of the most exquisite estates. Her projects are breathtaking, including a $45 million estate featured in her book and another $35 million masterpiece in the works. TOBE Tuesday ? A Dismal to Dynamic Basement Transformation ? What started as a simple reception desk and clubroom design turned into a full-scale upgrade of this 1960s apartment building’s basement. We saw an opportunity to elevate the entire sense of arrival—convincing the client to let us enhance the utilitarian corridor and restrooms leading to the newly remodeled clubroom. Challenges & Solutions: - A low concrete ceiling limited traditional lighting, so we created architectural portals that integrate lighting and define the space. - The once drab hallway became an elegant passage with dramatic lighting, art, and upscale tilework. - All achieved on an extremely tight budget without sacrificing style. The original dated kitchen in this Bethesda project interrupted the flow and entertaining, and here's why: ? The half wall created a visual and physical barrier, separating the kitchen from the dining/living space. This can make the kitchen feel smaller and more closed off from the rest of the living space. ? The taller peninsula is not ideal for entertaining: people often gather in the kitchen, making a more open space desirable. The half wall and peninsula hinder this flow and can make it less easy for guests to interact with those working in the kitchen or for those in the kitchen to participate in the rest of the party. We dramatically transformed the space into an open concept kitchen with a modern aesthetic. The clean lines and neutral colors also make this a timeless design.
