Barry Maddox, a lifelong veteran of the food industry and a founder and longtime employee of Alliance Retail Group, passed away on November 19. Barry was a dear friend to many in industry and was a guiding force within the leadership of TGCSA and especially the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Here’s an excerpt: One of Barry’s passions was education and he dedicated countless hours in fundraising for the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. Barry’s efforts through the West Tennessee Scholarship Golf Classic and creation of the West Tennessee Breaking Clays for College raised over $1 million. An endowed scholarship named for Barry’s parents, LD and Marilyn Maddox, was created to recognize and honor Barry for his commitment and efforts in raising funds. It awards 3 scholarships annually to student employees or dependents of the employees of a TGCSA member company. Barry was the only recipient of both the Hall of Eagles Award and the Golden Eagle Award (only one to receive to date) for his fundraising efforts on behalf of the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation for the LD & Marilyn Maddox Scholarship Award. Donations under Barry’s name can be made at https://lnkd.in/eHNC4nFW Thank you, Barry, for all you have done for us.

Today, we remember and celebrate the life of James Kent “Jimmy” Nichols, a true pioneer and beloved figure in the grocery industry, who passed away on Tuesday, November 5, after a brief illness. Jimmy dedicated his life to this industry, leaving an indelible mark on the countless lives he touched. A former member of the TGCSA Board of Directors, Jimmy was recognized in 2022 as our Retailer of the Year, a testament to his enduring commitment, leadership, and mentorship. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Linda, and their family during this difficult time. From his early days at Safeway Stores in Austin, Texas, to his role as President and COO at Houchens Food Group, Jimmy exemplified dedication, passion, and an unwavering drive to uplift others. His career spanned over decades, touching both the retail and wholesale sides of the industry, guiding and inspiring many along the way. A memorial service for Jimmy will be held on Friday, November 22, at noon at J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Jimmy's legacy lives on through the people he mentored, the family he loved, and the industry he championed. We are forever grateful for his contributions and leadership. Farewell, Jimmy.
