This week, Maine joined Tennessee, Washington, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Kansas becoming the seventh state needed to activate the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact. Legislation is currently pending in Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.??
The ADA is celebrating a huge win for dentistry! Seven states have enacted the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact into law, which means the compact will officially become active. The Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact will allow licensed dentists and dental hygienists to practice in any other participating state. And dentists are relocating: One in seven dentists with less than 10 years of experience changed states during the 2019-2022 period. This compact will reduce barriers to multistate practice and license portability and ensure a continuum of care for patients across state lines. The creation of the licensure compact was truly a collaborative effort. The ADA worked alongside the American Dental Hygienists' Association, The Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO), American Dental Education Association (ADEA), American Association of Dental Administrators, American Student Dental Association and the United States Department of Defense. State dental societies also were directly involved in enacting these laws. Successful day at the Capitol! On Tuesday, TDA members, joined by lobbyists and staff, took part in Tennessee Dentists' Day on the Hill engaging lawmakers in discussions regarding our legislation (SB 677/HB 949). The bill secured unanimous support in both the House Insurance Committee and the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee. Special thanks to our bill sponsors, Rep. Clark Boyd and Sen. Shane Reeves, for recognizing TDA dentists in attendance. In addition to our physical presence on Capitol Hill, our grassroots efforts were incredibly successful. TDA members sent 245 emails and placed numerous calls to legislators in support of dental insurance reform legislation. We sincerely appreciate the time and effort you have dedicated to amplifying our impact! Our work is not done. To ensure the bill's full passage into law, we must maintain this momentum. If you have not done so, please sign up to receive TDA Advocacy Action Alerts by texting TNDENTAL to 50457. Remember: YOU are the most powerful advocate in advancing the cause of dentists and patients in Tennessee. #OrganizedDentistry?#advocacy
