Black Business Tour: Downtown Edition continues… - Why We’re Doing It? 1. Addressing Systemic Challenges: The statistics are alarming—96% of Black-owned businesses do not survive to see their fifth year. We are committed to changing that narrative. This event is designed to raise awareness about the challenges these businesses face, while also fostering a supportive community that encourages long-term success. 2. Community Empowerment: By organizing this event, we want to demonstrate the importance of supporting Black entrepreneurs. Our local economy thrives when diverse businesses flourish, and it’s crucial for us to come together as a community to uplift these voices and stories. 3. Hopes for Impact - Creating Sustainable Growth: Our ultimate goal is to encourage more people in the Wichita community to consciously support Black-owned businesses, not just during this event, BUT BEYOND. We believe that increased patronage can lead to sustainable growth and increased longevity for these businesses. 4. Strengthening Community Bonds: We hope that the connections made during the Black Business Tour foster ongoing relationships between community members and local entrepreneurs. Left on Read, Wichita’s newest bookstore, celebrated its ribbon cutting this morning. The store, which largely stocks books by Black authors, will have its soft opening tomorrow (Saturday, November 23) from noon-4 p.m. during the Black Business Tour. Left on Read is also the headquarters for Latasha N. Eley Kelly, Ph.D.'s other businesses The Millennial Black Professor? | TMBP Media, the latter of which launched the BLACK in One Piece podcast earlier this year. The store is located off Gallery Alley, across the street from Naftzger Park, in the 600 block of East Douglas Avenue.
