Gene Charville was born and raised on a #farm ?? in Northern Ohio, and then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics at The Ohio State University. He spent many years in the Farm Credit system and also worked with AgriFinancial. Gene joined us as a senior relationship manager this past June. When asked what attracted him to Tiverton, he noted, “There is a unique sense of enthusiasm among everyone at Tiverton. Enthusiasm for finding solutions to the situations and opportunities that we are fortunate to encounter.” In his free time, Gene enjoys spending time with family, hiking and bicycling ??, and spending time in the N.C. mountains ??. As a volunteer gardener in a San Francisco urban #garden, Christopher Renfro identified a need to reintroduce people of color to the joys of growing plants ??, to fresh #produce and its preparation, to the delights of #wine ?? and how to make it. He founded a program called the Two Eighty Project with a mission to increase diversity in the wine industry by using eight rows of #grapes ?? in the urban garden as a laboratory for groups of young people to dig in the soil, care for the vines, learn to harvest the grapes and eventually make wine.

Pumpkin ?? spice (which typically contains cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and sometimes allspice) is ubiquitous this time of year. When Starbucks sought to create a flagship fall beverage, legend says they were drinking espresso ? and enjoying pumpkin pie ?? and brainstorming how to transform the combination of a warm coffee and tasty dessert. Then in 2003, the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte was born, and it quickly became their customers’ favorite seasonal ?? beverage. Competitors took note of the phenomenon and flavor chemists ???? went to work on creating similar beverage concepts. In the process, it was discovered ?? in 2015 that the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte contained no actual #pumpkin. This was quickly remedied when liquid pumpkin puree was incorporated in a revised Starbucks recipe later that year. #pumpkinspice #ag

Banana ?? plant enthusiast and grower Gabriel Sachter-Smith knows #bananas. He has identified approximately 500 varieties in his travels around the tropical world ?? and is proving to be a valuable resource for scientists ???? who are concerned about fungal diseases wiping out the monocrop. (In many cases, bananas of the same variety are grown year after year on the same land and it’s easier for diseases to attack crops ?? with a single gene.) In the event of a #banana disease ?? outbreak, genetic engineering and breeding are top of mind. Nearly 170 of Mr. Sachter-Smith’s findings ?? are in a gene bank that holds the germplasm of more than 1,600 banana varieties. The plants hibernate in test tubes ?? and are available for use should the need arise.

He used his knowledge of apples and #farming practices to lay the groundwork for future settlers of the uninhabited land.
