Each of these events featured CIO level executives from Pension Funds, Endowments, Foundations, Sovereign Investors, Consultants, RIAs & Family Offices from all over the world! The common theme shared by investment officers around the world was how to leverage 3rd party funds to generate returns in portfolios. ? Really cool to see how our unique fund manager "think-tank" concept that was created as we moved from COVID to post COVID is still going strong today and catching on abroad! Honored to join fellow LPs - Anurag Chandra, Kai Chen, Keith Spears - for an engaging discussion on the state of private markets investing. Select takeaways: 1. U.S. private markets are poised to benefit from improved financial conditions. Many buyout GPs however still have problematic ZIRP-era assets. As realizations take place, relative (out/under-) performance may be quite pronounced. LPs will have a chance to be discerning and crowd-to-quality in 2025-2026. 2. Many LPs lack conviction on how best to invest in AI. For large allocators, the trade-off between writing larger checks to VCs v.s. sticking with software/SaaS isn't obvious. LPs with flexibility should consider both, i.e. barbell strategy. 3. Recent U.S. public equity performance has impacted relative desirability of PE/VC. Allocators are grappling with different approaches to assess performance, increase transparency and guide strategy, e.g. Total Portfolio Approach (TPA), factor investing, synthetic PE portfolios. On balance, the hurdle for private markets return has trended up. Thank you Titan Investors for the invitation to attend a very interesting panel on the evolution of asset allocation landscape, where I had the opportunity to introduce the Total Portfolio Approach (TPA), released by CAIA, a strategy that moves beyond the traditional 60/40 allocation by incorporating private equity, private debt, and real assets. These less liquid assets can better align with long-term objectives, offering potential for higher returns and greater diversification. However, challenges remain in modelling expected returns and constructing portfolios that fully integrate these assets. TPA goes beyond the concept of categorizing by asset class; it’s about bringing the best ideas into portfolios, provided the governance structure is prepared to evolve accordingly.
